I'm selfishly using this to mention that starting tomorrow, I'll be running a worldbuilding prompt game focused around a specific item's supply chain in your world called #Marchistics.
My pinned post has a better breakdown of what to expect. π
Happy building. βοΈ
Love the deconstruction and subsequent analysis of something we take for granted every day.
And, of course, the footnotes! π
It required some translation on the part of Manayka and Atosho to convey the issue: They couldnβt see how to make a gasoline engine be efficient at varying speeds. An engine that worked for walking speed would be horribly wasteful at highway velocity. How could βcarsβ possibly be practical? I could tell they thought theyβd found a genuine technical inconsistency. Atosho had gotten even more reserved. βAnd when you stop?β Nerugo glared. βEh-na-gee-na must turn. All etomokeh. Or else fail.β She was nearly as good as the gynologists at dumbing down her vocabulary. I held up a hand. βCan me show-doh? Inside-doh of haikuhchee?β Saloro drew a crude picture of the guts of one of their vehicles. I finally grasped the problemβthey had an electric motor for each wheel.[1] βI see. I see,β I blurted, somewhat desperately.[2] ββEngineβ hasβ¦β Crap. I didnβt know the word. I grabbed a βpencilβ and sketched a couple of meshing gears. ββ¦βgears.β Different size for differentβ¦ fastness.β A burst of insight. βAlso, βneutral.ββ I mimed pulling my hands apart. βNotβ¦ touch. Engine just turn, not make βcarβ go. βIdle.ββ I moved one hand in a circle, kept the other one still. [1] In fact, the motors are built into the wheels. The βtireβ (which is of course not rubber, but I donβt understand what it is made of; best I can gather, itβs a flexible ceramic?) is like a half-shell around the motor, and can be replaced separately. [2] The actual word was βvabihgeewu,β βreceived.β As in βI have picked up the signal.β
#WIPSnips 28: walk
Explaining internal combustion engines to a timeline where they never arose is... tough. On the face of it, they're ridiculously inefficient.

I can picture it so vividly. So the key, it seems, is to swear up a storm and only THEN use the crystals. *Takes notes.*

One of my favorite magic scenes from #Atlantis Book 1 is the moment Kena finally uses his crystal for the first time, after struggling for a long time to get it π§‘

Argentum in Aqua Finn McLellan All student magician Jonathan Fest wants is to keep his head down and finish out his first year of university without failing his exams too badly. Unfortunately for him, fate and the two secret societies warring in the shadows of the city have other plans. Enter stage left Archer, a gentleman scholar with a past a good deal more chequered than his present would suggest; Sabbat, a thief and assassin whose loyalty to the few people he counts as friends is as unshakeable as his temper is fiery; and Viola, ladyβs maid, bodyguard, and surrogate big sister to the only daughter of the most famous family of magicians in Sacaan. Thrown together by a series of unexplained events, the four magicians soon find themselves facing down a cunning adversary and an escalation in the shadow war which could spell disaster not just for them, but for the city as a whole. Penny dreadfuls, it turns out, are a lot less fun when youβre in one. Wordcount? Fucked if I know - a lot and then some (over 500,000 words and counting for the serial as a whole, last I checked). Genre? Queer Gothic gaslamp fantasy. Enemies to lovers? Friends to lovers? Not actually a romance per se, but the latter in the case of a certain couple of POV characters. Also the slowest of slow burns. No, seriously, slower than that. Audience? Well, we've got a POV character who uses the word 'fuck' and its derivatives as a warning a noun's coming (hi Sabbat), so...
