Qobuz isn't available in Taiwan, so guess I need to choose between Apple or Tidal

Bleh. The settings are great, the gameplay is more of the same from IT TAKES TWO, but the characters+dialogue+plot are so, so grating. Little desire to keep playing.

The non-profit second hand shop in our neighborhood has cases of Oatly for only $300 per box (6 cartons per box). I should get into oat milk arbitrage.

Customary Procedures Possible short story Friends, What do you think is the story behind the above photo? This scooter has been sitting on the side of the road for years, but I...

Wrote about a guzheng concert, cooking 滷味, the indirect communication stereotype versus my very direct neighbor, and more. Hope you like it, hope you subscribe.

What I ultimately realized is that, in a very narrow sense, “she’s just better at it” is often true. But that isn’t because she was born that way. Instead, it’s because she a) has invested in building up the skills and relationships that facilitate cognitive labor, and b) sees domestic outcomes as her ultimate responsibility. And what happens when someone is both highly motivated and gets lots of practice? Usually, they get good at something!

Then the question becomes, why are women disproportionately investing in building these skills in the family arena, and why do they feel so responsible for outcomes like whether the kids are dressed in matching socks or show up to school with their clarinet on band day?

Because they’ve been taught from birth that this is part and parcel of femininity, and that if they fail there will be consequences. Meanwhile folks raised as boys have been taught a corollary set of lessons, about how masculinity is about not paying attention to such things. And when it comes to gender, there’s no resting on one’s laurels.

One of the most-cited articles in the sociology of gender argues that “man” and “woman” are not stable identities but roles we must constantly perform. It’s less “I am a woman” and more “I do woman.” And one of the most legible ways to “do” woman is—still!—to care about things like what your house looks like when company comes over or whether you’ve responded to all the birthday party invites your kid received. On the flip side, overlooking the dishes in the sink or forgetting to check your personal email remain very legible ways to “do” man.

Not having to drive is literally my number one reason for continuing to live in Taiwan. It's so alien to be to choose to do so when going places where public transportation will easily take you (without even getting into the moral issues of contributing to car infrastructure)

I only have a few close friends who have cars in Taiwan, but man most of them want to drive everywhere even when it's horrifically inconvenient to find parking then they complain about the parking cost. Some kind of vehicle-borne illness.

The best description I can give you is an idealized escape room as a video game, with connections to MYST and the board game BETRAYAL AT THE HOUSE ON THE HILL. Don't read anything about it, otherwise.

BLUE PRINCE is on sale on Steam - this is the best puzzle game I've ever played. Highly highly recommend. If you haven't seen my posts on it, my wife and I worked on it together, filling up half a notebook in the process, and had an absolute blast.

An hour into it and it's entertaining, but... and I understand it's part of the point... I hate these characters so much. IT TAKES TWO characters felt much less cliche.

Took a wonderful little hike up 福州山 today with NTU students and scholars.

This continues my year of being a ball of rage at how good exercise makes me feel after.
