(Also the labyrinth is a music box that plays my favourite track from the Pathologic 2 soundtrack. I feel very Seen.)

A photograph of a box containing a miniature version of the abyssal labyrinth, including a miniature version of this author, probably composing their own skeet about an even tinier labyrinth with an even tinier version of themself inside.

My wonderfully talented best friend has used her powers for evil and trapped a tiny version of me inside a tiny abyssal labyrinth. Don’t worry, I’m having an amazing time in there.

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing β€˜reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

it is weird to know the peak of success as a content creator is "many brand deals and a podcast with multiple advertisers" while I was taught in journalism school how some reporters do not drink coffee at press events to avoid conflicts of interests

β€œThe Great Gatsby isn’t about the parties” oh yeah? What happens when he stops hosting the parties? Does that work out for him?

I spent three hours learning more than I ever wanted to about James I/VI’s sex life and none of it made it into my essay. Fuck.

And I’m REAL MAD that I feel this way because the games industry does genuinely have a problem with insularity that leads to people avoiding negative critique in case it upsets people. I would LOVE if we all started Doing Real Criticism. But for some reason it always manifests like… this.

My best friend sending me a poorly written article: delightful, hilarious, no notes
You all blasting the article in public where everyone can see you scrambling for an original take: Oh Dear

Ultimately the practice of dunking exists because a lot of people have forgotten the difference between privately ridiculing something and publicly critiquing it. It’s parasocial behaviour in reverse.

Comic. [Person is sitting at a desk with a laptop, turned toward voice coming from off-panel.] VOICE FROM OFF-PANEL: I got you the ingredients for dinner tonight. Oh, and the plums in the fridge drawer are for my yogurt tomorrow; you should just leave them. Be back later! PERSON’S THOUGHT BUBBLE: Oh no. [caption] Help. It actually happened. I shouldn’t. But how can I not!?

Really though, millennials are so infantilised compared to previous generations. Rising student loans delayed or prevented us leaving home. The cost of housing makes us dependent on parental goodwill. The qualification barrier is higher for us than any previous generation. And it’s worse for Gen Z.

(I for one eagerly await the arrival of the Gender Fairy, who I presume will exchange my defunct baby genders for at least 20p apiece.)

Flashbacks to my parent earnestly telling me that trans people shouldn’t be allowed to use the right bathroom because people don’t know their gender until they’re at least 35.

The one time I’ve thought about it is when an overpaid tax refund got funnelled directly into paying back less than 1% of my student loan, with no option to retrieve it. I could have really used that extra Β£500.

If it's not okay to have AI write articles then why is it okay to have AI do your translations. Best case hire a JP speaker on staff. Second best use a translation from a human and link. Automaton, Siliconera and if I may say GamesRadar+ all have speakers on staff you can link to.
