Fun fact: itโ€™s me that writes the Maths Gear newsletter!

It comes out on average once per month (youโ€™ll have to sign up to find out which kind of average)

The layers of nerdery here ๐Ÿ˜… let me explainโ€ฆ!

@wordle-tetris.bsky.social is day by day showing the frames of a Tetris game played on Wordle

and does-it-glider.com is one of my fave weird internet artefacts, where you run your wordle score through Conwayโ€™s Game of Life to see if it forms a glider๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ’—

This was my attempt at todayโ€™s Wordle Tetris (definitely not done at 15mins past midnight)

Ooooh day 2 of Wordle Tetris is going well!

Also, lil bonus game, you can do your wordle as normal and then attempt wordle Tetris manually - I didnโ€™t match with any of @wordle-tetris.bsky.social words but I did manage to make the Tetris frame!

Small Rhombicosidodecahedron if u even care.

I know it can be made with a single (incredibly long) modelling balloon because every vertex only has four lines coming from it, so it has an โœจEulerian pathโœจ

Not sure what phase of my life Iโ€™m in, but hereโ€™s that modelling balloon icosidodecahedron nobody asked for!

In theory it could be made out of a single modelling balloon, although in reality they donโ€™t make balloons long enough :(

The @ima-maths.bsky.social seems quite proud they invited BAE to speak at their conference.

I am so so disappointed that an institution which normally funds sweet creative maths projects and supports maths communities has chosen to platform BAE Systems which produces munitions used in genocide.

Itโ€™s not too late for the @ima-maths.bsky.social to un-invite them or just entirely bin that conference all together.

It is possible to take a stand, not doing so would be a choice - maths is not neutral.

I donโ€™t think that @ima-maths.bsky.social should be inviting speakers from BAE Systems to speak at their conference when BAE manufactures weapons which are used by Israel in the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

That sounds like Maths being complicit to me.

Aww that sucks that you were the only young woman in your class! Hopefully something that changes in future.

For this particular instance Iโ€™m not even sure the stat tells an accurate story. Half of all women could have 3 children and half with none and the births per woman would still be 1.5 ๐Ÿ˜‚

04.07.2025 14:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Maybe it kinda makes it feel like Iโ€™m expected to give birth to 1.57 childrenโ€ฆ

Or like the birth rate is somehow โ€œwomenโ€™sโ€ responsibility when there are two people involvedโ€ฆ?

I canโ€™t quite explain it but something about describing a countryโ€™s birth rate in โ€œbirths per womanโ€ feels really misogynistic.

(As well as the obvious erasure of NB n trans peeps who give birth)
