Finally out! Mass spec analysis of #trypanosome flagellar tubulins reveals some surprises including a new #glutamylation site on beta-tubulin! Many thanks to the teams of Julia Chamot-Rooke and Mariette Matondo!

We propose a model where the new flagellum grows in a linear manner while the old one is locked but shrinks slightly, hence requiring unlocking and compensation after cell division, leading to such multicoloured flagella following induction/deinduction/reinduction of tagged tubulin π

Two hypotheses were proposed (restriction @ the flagellum base or @ the injection) but in this preprint, Aline Alves reveals it is a third way! It all happens in the proximal portion of the flagellum!
