Canadian. Statistician. Math. Show me the evidence. I've been known to dwell on little things like pandemics, population health, preventable deaths, disinformation, authoritarians, kleptocracies, annexation, and protecting democracies. Also, Leafs & Jays.

21.11.2025 18:50 β π 10 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Is it only me that thinks the Trump-Putin peace plan, if accepted by Ukraine, directly imperils the remaining sovereign Ukraine, Moldova, and the Baltic states in the next ten years?

15.11.2025 22:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm by no means perfect when it comes to character but nothing bothers me more than someone who lies to me. Especially if the lie assumes I must be stupid or uninformed. It's why I have spoken up about politics and it's why I disqualify many political candidates from the get-go. Truth still matters.
15.11.2025 21:46 β π 93 π 11 π¬ 3 π 0The supreme irony here may be that the Canadian populist politician Poilievre gained support by blaming Trudeau for high food prices while at the same time having his campaign run by a top Loblaws consultant. I am filling out a form right now to get $50 from a Loblaws bread price-fixing settlement.
15.11.2025 21:28 β π 40 π 8 π¬ 1 π 1It may be unclear from these charts that show % growth but if a grocer bumps prices up 10% for valid (temporary) pandemic reasons and then those reasons disappear and they then "only" bump prices up another 3%, then they are keeping the 10% and 3%.
15.11.2025 21:21 β π 26 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0Convince me I'm wrong: Food price levels in Canada and the US are primarily the result of pandemic disruptions and the food supply chain greedily avoiding cuts in inflated prices once the pandemic subsided. Anti-government populist politicians prefer to blame the government.
15.11.2025 21:04 β π 72 π 18 π¬ 6 π 0That's a valid question. And from what I have read the number actually leaving is significantly lower than the number expressing their desire to leave. That said, I think the important takeaway from the poll is the unprecedented and significant number now expressing that desire.

Important to remember the power of foreign state actors in shaping vaccine hesitancy...
Social media and vaccine hesitancy gh.bmj.com/content/5/10...
"...a substantial relationship between foreign disinformation campaigns and declining vaccination coverage."
There are some jurisdictions in Canada that fail to fully support or promote vaccinations, vaccinations proven to reduce hospitalizations. Those same jurisdictions are trying to limit healthcare spending and have shortages of doctors and overcrowded hospitals during flu season. Make this make sense.

Let me remind you that the leader of the Canadian Conservative party is on record for the permanent abolition of all future vaccine mandates, no matter the degree of public health emergency or epidemic, no matter the risk of uncontrolled spread, no matter the potential suffering and deaths.
10.11.2025 15:33 β π 67 π 26 π¬ 3 π 0I'm proud to be Canadian but there are times when I am just a little bit ashamed.
10.11.2025 15:24 β π 20 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Canada has lost its measles elimination status.
A sad day, a win for anti-vaccine ignorance and politicized public health, a new age where children, families, and communities will face additional health risks for no good reason other than the comfort of joining others with similar fact-less beliefs.
Correct for execs to resign from the BBC after distorting what Trump said. But imagine if all those who lied to the public with "fake news" were forced to resign when caught out. "Double standard" doesn't begin to capture what is happening these days.

While on the topic, we take the high dose Flu vaccine shots recommended by Ontario Public Health for seniors.
bsky.app/profile/jake...
As far as Ontario Canada, it is very early days. The lab testing rate for flu is low (1.8%) but rising now, indicating increased activity. The positivity is much higher in children 5-11 (7.8%). No evidence yet that H3N2 is taking over dominance of Influenza A strains.
09.11.2025 13:07 β π 15 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0One area of concern that I have and it is often not communicated in the media, is the lower vaccination rates being seen in children. It's not just the children and transmission to classmates and parents that I am concerned about, it is their more frail grandparents who could end up in hospital.
09.11.2025 12:48 β π 23 π 2 π¬ 1 π 1More from Australia. Even if the flu shot is less effective this year (and we do not know yet), it remains a much better alternative than going into the season with zero protection, especially if you have increased health risks.
www.racgp.org.au/gp-news/medi...
We may see a more serious flu season this year, for several reasons, including record numbers already seen in Australia this year, the potential for the H3N2 strain to be less well-matched to vaccines, and the rise of vaccine hesitancy due to misinformation.

Yes and if you check back Trump explicitly intimidated many companies into keeping the tariff impact on products hidden, eg Walmart.
07.11.2025 01:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It is true that exporters in other countries also end up subsidizing a smaller share of the tariff costs. But even the latest studies show American consumers are bearing the brunt of the increased cost. The costs are being increasingly passed on to individual Americans.‡οΈ
www.cfr.org/article/who-...
Tariff = tax.
Like all taxes, the revenue goes to the government and comes out of the pockets of consumers and businesses. Too many Americans do not understand this, even though they are the ones paying the tax.
This article presents a fairly clear-eyed assessment of where we are. There are plenty of risks and uncertainty in our economy and the government's budget and intervention is bold. Will we weather this storm well and if so, at what cost? Let's hope we get this right.
www.cbc.ca/news/busines...
As always, I post to warn Canadians about the many ways a democracy can fold and to not be deluded into thinking the current version of America is anything like the one they knew.
