Hangan suggests that Afro-Latino and African American communities’ everyday lives in the Southwest may be underrepresented in archaeology due to a lack of identifiable artifacts. Read why this matters. buff.ly/3VioFCx

I'm going to choose one part of this to address bc otherwise I'll get too pissed off but like ofc disability restrictions on immigration are awful but also "many countries" =/= EVERY country, there are in fact many disabled people who manage to immigrate to various locations globally!!!!

Hi hello has anyone compiled a list of Black writers who live around or engage with the North American Great Lakes region? And if not does anyone wanna collaborate on making a list bc I think one should exist

I imagine some people may have been receiving decent trans healthcare in 2010 but this was like, the one person in all of northeastern Wisconsin who knew anything about transness and she was older than my parents and I’m not sure when the last trans patient she had was but my guess is ca. 1990

ngl any time I am reminded of the first mental health professional I saw for Trans-Related Issues back in 2010 I’m just deeply overwhelmed by how shitty trans healthcare has been for so long and the fact that it’s sometimes even halfway decent is an EXTREMELY recent development

this isn’t unique to this specific link but can just I take this opportunity to say that I regularly reread your essays as inspiration for how to do history writing but Good

that's so great. When I gave the students the journals I told them about the history of commonplace books and I was surprised how many hadn't heard of them, I feel like they've had a comeback in recent years

03.03.2026 18:19 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

awww thanks. last semester I had them do this but on notecards and it was great but the problem was I ended up with a fuckton of notecards in my bag that I kept getting mixed up and lost...journal is a great solution hahaha

03.03.2026 18:11 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

it's SO cool to see how they are using the notebooks differently (I told them they could also use it to put class notes in if they wanted) and to see how their reflections have developed over the past six weeks. Cost me about 40 bucks ($1 per notebook times almost 40 students) but WORTH IT

03.03.2026 18:07 β€” πŸ‘ 8    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

this semester, as a way to manage attendance, I gave all my students a composition notebook and every class we spend 5-10min copying down and reflecting on a different quote. I am now collecting their journals at the halfway point and this was like the best teaching idea I ever had ngl

Thank you for drawing it to my attention! I think I said this in another post but at this point I expect media reporting on studies/reports (not just about trans people but in general) to be kind of not-quite-right. It's part of the way news works but I like to do the deep dive personally.

03.03.2026 18:05 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

unfortunately I think I am a little bit oversensitive at this point to how headlines and articles about investigative studies on trans issues get spread virally and often misinterpreted, so I always try to go to the sources. It's an important report for sure.

03.03.2026 13:37 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

IMO the Advocate did a poor job reporting this by mixing together analysis applied to cis lynchings ruled suicides alongside transmisogynist hate crimes. I think it's important to consider these together but saying "Black trans women are being killed and their deaths ruled suicides" isn't quite true

03.03.2026 13:12 β€” πŸ‘ 10    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I feel ill doing the numerical breakdown after reading all the names and seeing the photos of these individuals, to be honest, but I think it's important to see the gravity of the full picture. I encourage people to read the report if they feel they are able to, rather than just the article.

03.03.2026 13:12 β€” πŸ‘ 10    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

In total, they count about 150 cases, of which 75 were modern-day lynchings and 83 were other suspicious hate crimes. 50 of them were trans women, the majority of whom were killed by gunshot but often with additional violence. Most were not deemed suicides but have not received hate crime status.

03.03.2026 13:12 β€” πŸ‘ 10    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Some notes after reading the report: They include both modern-day lynchings (deaths by multiple perpetrators ruled suicides) and single-perpetrator hate crimes that include official misconduct/disregard though not ruled suicides. The majority of Black trans women included are in the second category.
