(Also, try to polish radially, so that the scratches you make will be radial ones. Tangental scratches are more likely to cause skipping than radial ones.)

you can usually get some good improvement in readability for an old optical disc with polishing compound (like you’d use on a a car with swirl marks), a clean rag, and effort.
