At Trump's inauguration, Elon Musk threw out two unambiguous salutes, and the media twisted itself in knots trying to rationalize why he did so. Even if the mainstream media didn't call it then, other groups, such as The Proud Boys, recognized it immediately and featured it on social clips. At Charlottesville, back in 2017, young men were chanting slogans and throwing the same kinds of salutes, and the media did not identify them then, even if the people marching called themselves as such.
