A surprisingly fun digression on Hume's debts to Polybius with multiple appearances of Machiavelli and Adam Smith (and some Plutarch) I know, that Polybius ascribes the infamy of Greek faith to the prevalency of the EPICUREAN philosophy; but I know also, that Punic faith had as bad a reputation in ancient times, as Irish evidence ha...

I may become a Hegelian if the current war against Iran leads to the establishment of liberal democracy in the Gulf Statelets.

Black and white image of John Bright. He has wispy white hair with bushy mutton chops and a neck beard. He is dressed in a dark suit, apparently sitting, with his elbow resting on a table and his hand touching his facial hair. He's looking into the foreground and to the left, with a serious expression.

John Bright was a man for our times: an advocate of free trade, expanding the democratic franchise, eroding aristocratic privileges, a peaceful foreign policy, and undermining the American Slave Power.

"Be just and fear not."

Just learned that was his motto, and I think that's neat.

Btw, Afghanistan and Pakistan also seem to be involved in an escalating war, which is especially notable (and instructive) because not so long ago Pakistan's military aided the Taliban into power.

Is The Fall of Hyperion as good the first volume? I have been hesitating about reading it because I didn't want to ruin my admiration.

Raising tariffs on 'allies' and then being irritated that they are lukewarm about your wars is pretty rich.

A party that is resolutely anti-bourgeois while being staffed and supported by the bourgeoisie is an intriguing and inevitably impossible strategy.

Anyway good luck attracting those Reform voters who hate you.

Is anyone familiar with recent discussion of the legal status (in US law not international law) on the ban of assassination of foreign heads of state, especially absent a declaration of war?
