There is a lot to say about the new war, but it is absolutely wild that the assassination of the head of state of Iran (a large country) is announced confirmed by the President of the United States long before this news is credibly denied (or affirmed) by Iran.

But, second, don't let anyone claim they have stopped hallucinating. In a weird way, this makes them worse, because you often can't just eyeball the errors--you really need to pay attention to their output.

Both of these things are true at the same time: first, the current generation of commercially available flagship LLMs (GPT 5/Claude OPUs 4.5, etc.) are genuinely impressive. During the last month they have finally reached the level of interesting research assistance.

Elucidations Podcast

Last weekend I enjoyed recording two episodes for @bufordrat.bsky.social's excellent Elucidations podcast (elucidations.vercel.app). One episode was on ideas from my book, Evolution and the Machinery of Chance (press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...). #evosky, #hpbio.

U.S. Hits Another Boat in the Caribbean, Killing 3 The Defense Department did not provide evidence of its claim that the vessel was carrying drugs. At least 150 people have been killed in the campaign since September.

The Defense Department said that it blew up a boat in the Caribbean Sea on Monday, killing three people. The strike raised the death toll in the U.S. campaign against people it accuses, without providing evidence, of smuggling drugs at sea to at least 150. nyti.ms/4aN52ZY
