Gen 5 is heavier on the grind with some of the level requirements for evolutions are absurd on the new Pokemon.

And then from there you get to a more "modern" approach with the Exp. Share and onward starting in XY.

I honestly think you can go all the way back to Gen 3 and be fine generally if you play JRPGs. Only the water HMs are a pain, but you can workaround that easily.

Gen 4 (specifically Platinum and HGSS) can be a bit annoying with both depending on your tolerance for it, but is still worth it.
