Another recent acquisition...

I remember Stuart McLean, not very long before his passing, talking one night about his friends, the singers Kate and Anna McGarrigle - Kate herself had passed not long before - and he played "Mendocino". Driving alone in the dark on a lonely backroad at 11PM, it was the loveliest, loneliest moment.

Memorable but necessarily a good one. Saw Saving Private Ryan with my sister in law because she wanted to see it too. In shock after the film ended, I burst into tears while driving the car home and nearly crashed into a telephone pole. Had to pull over and sit there weeping copiously.

My neighbour either has forgotten to take down his Halloween stuff or else he's planning a *really* interesting Nativity scene.

Was sad to learn of the passing of Canadian historian Donald E. Graves a few days ago. Graves was a master storyteller and meticulous researcher and his books in the War of 1812 are go-to sources for their respective topics. He will be greatly missed.

An Olympics can have a deficit no more than a man can have a baby.....

Such a rarity. Tim Cook -- passionate ambassador for Canadian military history, and someone who was able to articulate and disseminate so well to so many. His loss is a real blow, made more painful at the young age of 54. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

No gold ones either, except for one in the Winter Olympics.

Quite enjoying this so far because the author speaks not only of the E.F. but the lives of Great Lakes sailors in general in the era in which it's set. Discusses earlier disasters and the shipping industry both on the lakes and in the Port towns.

And so I bought a copy.
