14.04.2025 13:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 2The paradox in Eshmun. is that he died at a young age without an heir. There's reason to believe his mother was responsible for his memorialization. This is why his sarcophagus has such an unusually long, extended narrative.
Probably also why we find curses here focused on progeny and lineage.
3/3
The preceding curse in Eshmun. finds interesting parallels with the death notices in the Book of Kings, where the ideals of a proper death are inverted in the Phoen. imprecations.
/joining royal ancestors > royal burial > succeeding progeny/
I point this out in Politics of Dead Kings.

Pretty much what you stated in the first comment (skeet?). In Phoenician & neighboring cultures, they had this way of using the past to look to the future.

Then I realized she was talking to our dog.
And here is HeBAI 14/1 (2025):

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Mark Leone's passing. A renowned archaeologist who taught at the University of Maryland for years, he held the rank of Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Anthropology.
Also crazy is that the only other person to play in the Final Four & a World Series was Tim Stoddard, who went to the same high school as Lofton, but years earlier!

Congratulations to my student Dana Levy for successfully defending her MA thesis in fulfillment of her degree in Jewish Studies at the UMD.
Pictured is Danya with her thesis committee: (me), Max Grossman, and Ed Cook from CUA. Professor Cook served as outside reader.

Found this while going thru some old papers!
Years ago when I was a fellow at the Albright in Jerusalem, the director Sy Gitin gave me a bunch of off-prints. This one, the editio princeps of the Ekron Inscription, is autographed by the three authors: Gitin, Trudy Dothan & Joseph Naveh.

Perfect response: โwe already knew that this tomb existed. The [Jordanian] department of antiquities had already excavated two tombs there, and they left that one closed for a future date, so itโs not as if itโs something new.โ
Thanks!
