I hate it when my family argues about politics at Thanksgiving. My Independent Dad is yelling at my Covenanter cousin for allying with the king while my Fifth Monarchist uncle keeps making cryptic pronouncements about the Book of Daniel, and here I am, a Leveller.

thanksgiving is a time for people to come together, to celebrate the spirit of unity despite our differences, and to demonstrate that, here is busta rhymes performing "break ya neck" with raphael the ninja turtle

Combatting poverty and hunger in this city will take every single one of us. Myself included.

"AI is inevitable and it *is* going to replace human teachers" should be understood as a prayer as much as a prediction

Whether the mere fact of use makes something "useful for everyone", the question the people shoving AI slop down your throat cannot answer

I can't find where but Wilson pretty explicitly says "I can read him but you shouldn't because he'll turn you woke" and then tells you about how the main point of Girard is that reverse racism and antisemitism are envy

I’m so bothered by the Leavitt family story that I had to shake up how I even describe these people.

The word is β€œdirty.”

You want the mother of your grandson who came here as a child deported to a country where she has nothing?

You’re a fucking dirty little freak. You’re not like the rest of us.

Have been saying for a while that Thiel and Vance seem to take the Apollonius section of ISSFLL as a set of instructions

Traditionally, the Church is a little reluctant to let you have even one spouse. 0 is the official ideal number

I think we can safely say that the Leavitt's brother called ICE on his ex, the mother of his child, and I have to say: I have no desire to respect, find common ground or share the country with these monsters.

I haven't read either, but I tend to follow William Cavanaugh in saying that "secularism/ization" is not the most accurate word for what has replaced traditional religious practice and communities.

I married into a ranching family so every holiday is a beef holiday. No complaints from me but one does miss the leftover utility

When I was a kid my mom would get the markdown turkeys from Walmart after Thanksgiving and do exactly this.

Yeah tbc I wanted to make a pretty limited point about discourse and am zero percent invested in any side of the liturgy wars which I find mostly pointless

I've never cooked a turkey simply because my Thanksgiving cooking has always been for six or fewer people but I will defend the turkey as a perfectly fine poultry and a fantastic source for the next month of pot pies, soups, and sandwiches

Yes and there's certainly a "for better and for worse" quality to the way this works. I'm thinking more descriptively than prescriptively.

But (to be a bit silly) even if I were to conclusively win that argument in the sight of the entire world, "Augustinianism" would mean something new as a result, and all past instances could now be read as leading inevitably to my final development of "True Augustinianism" (tried for the first time)

25.11.2025 04:04 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I consider myself an Augustinian, so does the Holy Father. Many hard right calvinists do the same. The tradition is contested and in some ways shaped by that contestation. I would certainly consider the rw Calvinist to have deviated, and I can show it is so by arguing from the sources

25.11.2025 04:04 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Determining what represents a deviation from that path is the site of the discourse I started with. Part of this sprung out of thinking about how something like Christianity has normative tools like creeds that traditions like "Augustinianism" or artistic traditions may not.

I guess I should say for general intelligibility that when I say modernist I mean in the literary and not theological sense, though I tend to think the theological sense is something of a hanging signifier
