Formulating diets with low IDP may improve resilience against enteric pathogens, especially Salmonella, and reduce economic losses during weaning.

👉 Bottom line: It’s time to rethink protein strategies in nursery diets.

💡 Industry Implications:
The negative effects of high-protein diets may not be driven by ETEC, as widely assumed with Salmonella appearing far more sensitive to IDP levels.

Simply reducing crude protein isn’t enough. IDP fraction matters for gut health and performance.

However, under Salmonella Typhimurium challenge, high IDP significantly worsened outcomes:
✅ Lower feed intake and weight gain
✅ More severe diarrhea
✅ Stronger inflammatory and oxidative stress responses
✅ Greater pathogen colonization and translocation

🔍 Key Findings:
Under ETEC challenge, increasing indigestible dietary protein (IDP) had minimal impact on growth, diarrhea severity, or immune status.
