Beyond those Calls aimed at governments or at specific industries or service providers, we encourage every Canadian to consider how they can give life to these Calls for Justice.

We will break it down into smaller posts to help settlers understand why it is important for every single one of us to speak up and we will give you tools to help understand. On August 5th we issued a public statement about a recent council meeting in Alberta, and yes it was long, but it could have been longer. Much longer. It is important to talk about; this takes place daily across Canada from seemingly innocent comments to radicalized hate speech, from coffee shops to council meetings. This stems from a lack of understanding and education about the role of Treaty partners and Canada’s consistent failure to uphold and honor Treaties made by the Crown on their behalf.

I think of how the rage and grief in our bodies is an expression of deep love. Love for life and dignity. Love for humanity. Love for Palestinians and their righteous struggle for liberation. This love is something the oppressors and colonizers will never have or understand.

This week I learned of the passing of a dear friend and colleague in medicine, Dr. Jill Konkin.

Today marks the 50th Prisoners’ Justice Day.

We remember those who have died while in custody and honour the ongoing struggle to decolonize, decriminalize and decarcerate, while walking and working in alliance with those inside and outside prison walls. 1/3

This day calls on all of us to confront the injustices within our prisons and the criminal legal system as a whole and to work to build communities where equality, justice, and human rights are realities for all. 2/3
