Willard Peterson's career focused on the study of Chinese history in the second half of the second millennium, focusing on the Ming ζ and Qing ζΈ empires. He joined Princeton University after a few years at Dartmouth College.

in 2017, Dr Harrison-Hall won the Book Prize Specialist Publication Accolade for her co-editing of "Ming China: Courts and Contacts 1400-1450", along with Craig Clunas and Yu-ping Luk. The book was described as "An outstanding connective history in pursuit of China's historical difference"
