Bunch of Senators on both sides sounding the alarm about possible boots on the ground in Iran after their classified briefing today.

I was told Kamala was going to send my children to fight in Iran. What happened?

Once while taking my students to the special collections reading room, I looked at some old 19th-century temperance tracts. It gave me a sense of why temprance was considered a progressive cause. One of them mentioned the practice of rubbing liquor on a baby's gums.

A book on this topic is The Alcoholic Republic by W.J. Rorabaugh, though I haven't read it.

It's not a defense of Prohibition which of course failed spectacularly, but an important thing to contextualize historically for why the temperance movement was such a big deal was that people used to drink *insane* amounts of booze compared to what we'd regard as normal today.

My take on Nigerian-style buns. Used overripe bananas, flour, baking powder yogurt, ground cinnamon & ginger, sweetened with stevia, to make a dough that I fried in canola oil. This was to satisfy nostalgic longing for Nigeria, where buns are street food, & party staples part of the "small chops."

Those look like arepas except for being made from corn rather than rice.

June 18, 2025. Masa. Northern Nigerian delicacy made from rice. Had lots of good masa while at NIPSS for my last sabbatical and wanted some. Best strategy for authenticity: make it myself. Dr. Gbemisola Abiola, my younger colleague who'd done fieldwork in Northern Nigeria helped. Turned out great.

AYMAN: Can you tell me where Iran killed thousands of Americans in America?

ANNA PAULINA LUNA: I said they are responsible for thousands of Americans being killed

AYMAN: Where?

LUNA: Are you serious right now?

AYMAN: It seems like you don't want to have a good faith conversation

A Reuters/Ipsos poll finds only 27% of Americans approve of the military attacks. 43% disapprove.

Please restrain from drinking too much as you have been warned from your staff and stay off social media when you are drunk. I pray in his holy month you find peace and respect for your self,

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

We're all fucking doomed. These are the stupidest people alive, and they're running the show.

The person Senator Markwayne Mullin is talking about here died in 1989.

Ruhollah Khomeini is NOT Ali Khamenei

Jesus Christ, someone get me an aspirin.

I remember once on the old Comic Book Resources forums, I wrote a post criticizing a comic by Brian K. Vaughan, and then guess who responded to it?

The War Powers Resolution needs a complete overhaul because it's obviously failed, but at the end of the day, there's no procedural trick around having a Congress that's willing to stand back and watch a president flagrantly break the law and the Constitution and do absolutely nothing about it.

“Of course,” Astrid says with great professionalism. “There are many wonderful women-loving-women stories to choose from. Do you have any other parameters for me to narrow the search for you? Do you like stories set on the high sea? In the Old West? Or maybe with a speculative element, you know, like—” “Like in Barbarella?” Gus Anderson’s eyes light up. Astrid has only the vaguest impression of a young Jane Fonda in a skimpy outfit on the Barbarella movie poster, an image that serves the male gaze as its raison d’être. “Comparable titles in the sense that these stories are also set in the future, or in space, or sometimes both,” she says firmly. “Would you like some recommendations?” “Absolutely.” The old man sounds giddy. “Bring them on.” Astrid writes down This Is How You End the Time War and Gideon the Ninth for him, and then personally takes him to the stacks to retrieve The Stars Are Legion, by Kameron Hurley. “There isn’t a single man in this book. Everybody on this planet is a woman.” “Oh, my!” Gus Anderson, his head probably brimming with images of thousands of chicks making out with one another for his delectation, checks out the book and leaves happily.

A fan messaged me about this passage from Sherry Thomas's book, "The Librarians," in which a librarian has an annoying older male patron ask her for some woman-on-woman sf😂

While we sit around to find out how bad exactly it all is, a bit of cheer: the best baguette of Paris competition was won by a Sri Lankan who appears to have started as a dish washer in restaurants and eventually trained as a Boulanger.

I write reviews of every comic I read, and sadly, it's much easier to review a comic I hated, compared to a comic that was just average.

Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war.

One very minor silver lining: this war is incredibly unpopular across the political spectrum and it is extremely unlikely that we will see the kind of civil society mobilizations on par with the post-9/11 hysteria.

if the media had any integrity — and it doesn’t anymore — they’d be pointing out on a loop that Obama made a deal with Iran, Trump cancelled it because Obama is Black, and then Trump started a war on the pretense there is no deal
