@arthurjchapman.bsky.social one for you causal reasoning in the wild - a Sierra Leonian chief reflecting on the 1898 House Tax War and using metaphor to communicate complex causation!

I reckon it’s hard wired. Piaget used to say that we learn by assimilating things 2 our prior (often tacit) assumptions (I.e. we use analogy 2 make sense of new things) or we accommodate (adapting our paradigms/schemata 2 the features of the new that they didn’t fit). It’s analogy all the way down….

Thanx @edurbin.bsky.social! Analogies R powerful things! Would be gr8 2 think about the uses & limitations of this one & also about just what kinds of ‘setting on fire’ are at stake here. My camel analogy was prompted by a student who started talking about apples & barrels, & games of Buckaroo.

Reminded, recently, of a couple of COVID CPD sessions that I put together 4 Sam Jones at BeBold History on teaching historical interpretations back in May and June 2020. If you're interested in teaching about differing perspectives on the past, the recordings might be 4 U.
