Perhaps your daughter means to point out that female protagonists seem only to be acceptable on the general reading list if they reject “traditional” feminine roles, which is a valid and cogent argument. But I’m still worried about the implications that might ensue from this argument.

I find that a bit distressing, to be honest. Scout “counts less” because she’s tomboyish? The fragmentation of gender identities might be a source of strength/solace to some who feel themselves more seen, but the implication is that you’re only fully female if you perform a specific femininity?
