‘Completely unexpected’: Antarctic sea ice may be in terminal decline due to rising Southern Ocean salinity Scientists once thought Antarctica might hold onto its sea ice as the world warmed. No longer.

Saltier water at the ocean surface behaves differently than fresher seawater by drawing up heat from the deep ocean and making it harder for sea ice to regrow.

January 2026 was the 5th warmest January on record for our planet. Temperatures were much colder than average across large parts of the extratropical Northern Hemisphere. In contrast, Australia had its 4th warmest.

There are STILL organizations using ArcMap for their GIS even though ArcGIS Pro has been out for over a decade.

Technology moves fast; capacity for adoption, not always.

#highlatitudedust activity yesterday in the southern S. America. Dry lakes emit dust in concert, making an important contribution to the area given that it is so pristine that even small amounts make a different.
Strong winds bring dust even to Antarctica and well into the Southern Ocean.
