LΓ‘szlΓ³ Krasznahorkai, world author (I.) the system of literary translations in the 21st century

"By the 2020s, Krasznahorkai has become one of the vanishingly few living world-literary authors whose works are promptly & pretty much automatically translated into English." @andrask.bsky.social has a really interesting series on LK's route to "world authorship" open.substack.com/pub/translat...

It might be good if the department for culture and Minsiter Patrick O’Donovan made a statement expressing solidarity for the several Irish artists who were in flotilla ships who have been detained by Israel over recent days.

More Irish activists have now been taken by the IDF from international waters including author Naoise Dolan, TD Barry Heneghan and psychiatrist Veronica O’Keane.

They are part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

In terms of locations outside the US, I'd imagine London was also well established on the mental map of New York editors, though? (It's also at least partly possible that this explanation helped him to gently reject someone...)

Budget 2026: Basic income for artists to become permanent The Basic Income for the Arts scheme will be put on a permanent footing in the Budget tomorrow.

This is fantastic news for Irish artists. The key thing now is that the scheme remains randomly allocated, rather than decided by some committee of govt-appointed gatekeepers.
It also begs the question, if Basic Income works for artists, why not extend it to everyone?

"It’s hard to imagine New Yorker fiction without the contributions of the many Irish writers who have been published in the magazine, but the first notable Irish story didn’t appear until 1945, two decades after the magazine’s founding. That was Frank O’Connor’s News for the Church, which is set chiefly in a confessional in Ballygrogan, Co Cork.

A couple of years earlier, as the scholar Ben Fried has noted, one of the magazine’s fiction editors, William Maxwell, rejected a story from a Tennessee-born writer with the somewhat rueful observation: β€œThe story belongs to a world that is essentially remote from New York City. The editors have in their minds an imaginary map of Manhattan which includes, strangely, all of Connecticut and Long Island, Florida, New Jersey, Hollywood, and wherever New Yorkers go.”

Quote from Cressida Leyshon, deputy fiction editor of the New Yorker

Publishing Distribution Practices: New Insights About Eco-Friendly Publishing, Sustainable Printing and Returns, and Cost-Effective Delivery in the U.S. - Publishing Research Quarterly The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated and highlighted the problems and opportunities within the book publishing industry’s distribution practices. This is a summary of the Publishing Distribution Practices report, researched and produced in collaboration with Portland State University, Independent Book Publishers Association, and PubWest. This article addresses research and recommendations for becoming carbon neutral, delivering books cost effectively, utilizing print-on-demand, minimizing returns, and examining supply chain issues raised by the pandemic. Findings include starting with paper and emissions assessment for more eco-friendly publishing; emphasizing pre-orders, local and discounted delivery, trade organization membership, and POS systems for cost-effective delivery; limiting outsourcing to restrict supply chain disruptions; reducing print runs and promoting books more effectively to minimize returns; and utilizing print-on-demand for proof copies and gap runs.

There are sections on pulping and recycling in this: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

A student in my publishing course is interested in researching book pulping and book recycling. Do we know any work or introductory material in this area?

(Work on remainders, print runs, supply chain, raw materials all relevant, too.)
