We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

I don’t want to replace the boring part of my job, because the boring part is important. I could have AI write me an outline, a step I hate doing, but in doing that step I always find mistakes to fix or jokes to make. I come out the other side a better writer.
