The myth of the metabolic baseline: how sleep-wake cycles undermine a foundational assumption in organismal biology

🧵THREAD: (1/7) Standard metabolic rate (SMR) is one of biology's most measured traits. We argue it isn't the constant baseline it's assumed to be. Our preprint discusses how sleep-wake cycles create a 'metabolic mosaic' that requires us to rethink how we interpret SMR. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

History made: Portugal takes lead in effort to stop deep-sea mining - Oceanographic Portugal has made history and taken leadership on ocean advocacy in Europe, becoming the first to adopt moratorium on deep-sea mining

Portugal🇵🇹 has become the first European country 🇪🇺 to introduce legislation banning deep-sea mining in its waters! ⛔⛏️✊

This comes at a crucial moment as the International Seabed Authority (ISA) meets in Jamaica 🇯🇲 to discuss a deep-sea mining code.

I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

Dear Non-Fascist Europeans,

The current US leaders believe they're allied with fascists inside your country against you, not allied with you against foreign invasion and threats to democracy.

I'm sorry, I wish it weren't true, but it is. You really need to adjust.

Sincerely,
Non-fascist Americans

A breeding ruff male (Calidris pugnax) in alert posture scans the breeding area for mating opportunities at Liminka Bay, Finland. Ruff males deploy one of three mating tactics that differ in aggressive and courtship behaviors. Differences in aggression between tactics are tied to concentrations of circulating androgens, which are modulated by the actions of a single gene.

Ruff males deploy one of three mating tactics that differ in aggressive and courtship behaviors. A single gene underlies male mating morphs in ruff sandpipers, a new Science study finds. The results show how evolutionary changes in a single gene's structure, sequence, and regulation can drive significant diversity within a single species.

Misinformation isn't random - it's strategic. 🧵

In the first cross-national comparative study, we examine 32M tweets from politicians.

We find that misinformation is not a general condition: it is driven by populist radical right parties.
