But, certain stories like A Monkey’s Paw or Beasts where small clever changes make a big impact made the lesser more average stories and somewhat off-putting tone worth journeying through anyhow.

It always felt clever the adding of whys and hows. But other tales like Jacked with a more modern Jack and the Beanstalk or Her Hair retelling Rapunzel felt less creative and more filler, adding nothing much to the retelling.

I liked when the stories are reimagining what might have happened before or after the original taleβ€”like with Little Man which interrogates Rumpelstiltskin’s desire to be a father, or the brother in A Wild Swan who isn’t fully transformed causing a descent into alcoholism and depression.

Fairytale retellings are some of my favourite things to readβ€”and some of Cunningham’s stories really pack a punch here, but after awhile the acerbic cynical tone started to grate on me and I found some of the modern elements gimmicky. Just average imo. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Emily Austin’s characters πŸ‘ŒπŸ½: weird, compelling, messy... but I didn’t love the formatβ€”a constantly evolving suicide letter written by an overly unreliable narrator… it got to be a little exhausting. This one was a little forgettable and somewhat disappointing tbh. Loved IFAS tho! 3.5⭐️

Painting showing a living room scene. Two little girls and a cat sit on the back of the couch looking out the living room window. In the window, we see a sunset scene in a neighborhood. The sky is bright with pink and purple clouds.

Really excited to be part of a group show at the Art Gallery of Alberta this January 25 - March 30. This show features five women from Edmonton and explores what it means to be a woman in the arts.
