Led by a Southern, Black, queer, feminist framework and grounded in the lived realities of our state, our staff brings expertise, community history, and a commitment to care that can’t be manufactured.

As always, our Healthcare Access Director has been going above and beyond to ensure Alabama and Mississippi residents have proper access to care. These are our current numbers for Abortion Funding for the month of October. ✨💜

Kiese Laymon is a Black southern writer from Jackson, Mississippi. Laymon is the Libbie Shearn Moody Professor of English and Creative Writing at Rice University. Laymon won the 2022 NAACP Image Award for fiction and named a notable book of 2021 by the New York Times critics.

Join us virtually on Tues. December 2nd from 6:30-8pm for our monthly writing workshop! This month we are delighted to welcome Kiese Laymon as our creative workshop facilitator.

🗣️Bama Barbies stand up!!!

Stay tuned as we continue our Subgrantee Spotlight series and highlight more of the organizations moving Reproductive Justice forward in the South.

We’re also highlighting Diamonds for Doulas, a Black-led doula org creating affirming, culturally grounded birth & postpartum support for families. Their doulas stand beside parents with compassion, skill, and deep knowledge helping families feel safe & empowered throughout their birthing journeys.

We’re spotlighting Chocolate Milk Mommies, a collective dedicated to uplifting & supporting Black breastfeeding families through education, community care, & advocacy. Their work improves health outcomes and ensures Black parents have the resources they deserve to nourish their babies & themselves.

Our communities thrive when Black parents and birthing people have the care, dignity, and support they deserve. We’re honored to resource and uplift these leaders who embody that truth every day.

As part of our commitment to Reproductive Justice, Yellowhammer Fund invests in the community-rooted organizations making birth, breastfeeding, and postpartum support accessible; especially for Black families across Alabama.

We applaud Be Kind Birmingham for the work they do in the Magic City, and are grateful for the way they show up in community.

Our Next Subgrantee Spotlight is Be Kind Birmingham! ✨💜

Be Kind Birmingham is known for their mobile Free Store, which they have run out of a renovated school bus. They consistently show up at libraries throughout the city of Birmingham to supply people with resources they need.

We are endlessly grateful for the work they put in daily to serve Trans POC throughout the state.

Our next spotlight is TAKE Resource Center! 💜✨

TAKE has been uplifting the voices of our TGNC community members since 2012, and hasn't skipped a beat! By providing direct service, wellness retreats, mentorship, and much more, TAKE has become an irreplaceable staple in Alabama.

Yellowhammer Fund granted over $275K in October to organizations that keep the work moving around Alabama. We would be remiss if we didn't show you the organizations chosen, and the impact they have in the community!

Today we honor this truth by remembering those we’ve lost and investing in the work of those who fight to ensure we don't lose more. TKO keeps our people are protected, affirmed, and supported. We show our gratitude for their work by providing funds year after year so their work may continue.

At Yellowhammer Fund, our work is shaped by the truth that Reproductive Justice is impossible without Trans liberation. Our communities cannot be free if Trans people are not free.

We're rolling out a digital volunteer initiative in 2026! We're looking for 5-10 Digital Defenders looking to highlight the Reproductive Justice movement and YHF community.

We thank the team at 21Ninety for highlighting our collectivist efforts and those of other values-aligned organizations doing community-centric work in these trying times.

Her goal is to not only make abortion possible for people in a region with strong anti-abortion laws and rhetoric, but also to make the cumbersome experience of being forced to travel as comforting and caring as possible.

We would like to take a moment to extend our deepest and warmest appreciation to our Healthcare Access Director, Kelsea McLain. Her deep commitment to abortion seekers is inspiring and shapes the way we do this work.
