Serious Nonsense Each time the second day of February comes around, I am reminded of a question that first entered my mind many years ago, "Just what in the name of John James Audubon does whether or not a particular ...

Happy marmot bothering day!

Some mistakenly hold the idea that Germans are staid and humorless, but they can get up to some very serious nonsense when they feel so inclined, hence today's rodent rousting festivities. @psupress.bsky.social #Booksky

Remembering the War, Forgetting the Terror: Appeals to Family Memory in Putin's Russia By Ekaterina V. Haskins Russian state propaganda has framed the invasion of Ukraine as a liberation mission by invoking the Soviet-era myth of the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), in which the Soviet people, led by Russia, saved the world from the greatest evil of the twentieth century. At the same time, the Russian government has banned civil society institutions and initiatives that remind the country of the legacy of Soviet political violence.

Congratulations to Ekaterina V. Haskins, whose book REMEMBERING THE WAR, FORGETTING THE TERROR was named a 2025 Choice Outstanding Academic Title! https://www.psupress.org/books/titles/978-0-271-09713-8.html

Cartographies of Exclusion: Anti-Semitic Mapping in Medieval England By Asa Simon Mittman From the battles over Jerusalem to the emergence of the β€œHoly Land,” from legally mandated ghettos to the Edict of Expulsion, geography has long been a component of Christian-Jewish relations. Attending to world maps drawn by medieval Christian mapmakers, Cartographies of Exclusion brings us to the literal drawing board of β€œChristendom” and shows the creation, in real time, of a mythic state intended to dehumanize the non-Christian people it ultimately sought to displace.

Congratulations to Asa Simon Mittman, whose book CARTOGRAPHIES OF EXCLUSION was named a 2025 Choice Outstanding Academic Title! https://www.psupress.org/books/titles/978-0-271-09746-6.html
