Nico Wilterdink has died. He was a classical member of the Amsterdam School of sociology. Historically oriented, strongly influenced by Elias. He was a very friendly colleague at @fmg-uva.bsky.social. He looked back with fond memories to the @eui-eu.bsky.social where he had been a visiting fellow.

Now in Nuremberg at #IAB to give a keynote at a workshop on training, education, and the labour market.

I will talk about social mobility though :-) Feel I should go back to studying school-to-work. Maybe I should write a paper: “A sociological take on education, skills and labour markets”, and try to get it in an Econ journal.

Heeft de Universiteit Leiden nog helder voor de geest waar de universiteit als institutie voor staat? Wat een kaalslag bij de humanities. Ik las dat de leerstoel Arabisch al zo’n 500 jaar bestaat. Afrikacentrum is ook wereldberoemd. Is er geen andere oplossing?

Dit doet niets af aan de schrijnende gevallen uiteraard.Zo deed mijn dochter vrijwilligerswerk op een basisschool ten tijde van COVID, en het duurde vele weken voordat een school de toegang tot een laptop had geregeld van een Turks-Nederlands jongetje dat een Turks toetsenbord op de huis-laptop had.

Ongelijkheid naar SES was vooral aanwezig w.b. digitale vaardigheden, niet zozeer de toegang tot apparatuur. We vonden geen aanwijzingen voor een samenhang tussen de sociale compositie van een school en de beschikbare ICT-infrastructuur aanwezig op school.

de allerhoogste inkomens betalen ook in FR minder belasting, maar over de verdere hele linie is het patroon aardig vlak. Niet in Nederland. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens over belasting op vermogen. We moeten naar een #anderebalans.

Met alle bezuinigingen op til (waar die op het onderwijs mij meer zorgen baren dan op topsport maar dat terzijde), zou Nederland toch echt moeten omdenken t.a.v. belastingen. Zie onder. Als je alle belastingen meetelt betalen de hoogste inkomens de minste belasting in NL, maar niet in Frankrijk.
