Dan Bankhead is sadly forgotten as the 1st African American pitcher in the major leagues. He even hit a HR in his first MLB at bat.

1953: Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese.

1972: The Utah Stars take on the San Diego Conquistadors at Peterson Gym in San Diego.

Today in 1963 Harmon Killebrew hits 3 HRs at Fenway Park in a 13-4 Twins win. He’d hit another (#44 on the season) in the 2nd game of the doubleheader. He’d lead MLB in ‘63 with 45 HRs.

Andrés Galarraga turns 64 today. Hit 399 HRs and none were longer than this 524 ft blast in 1997.

Lou Brock was born OTD in 1939. Had 3,023 hits & 938 stolen bases also with a runner on 3B with less than two outs he hit .390/.411/.527 for his career (441 PAs). RIP

Tony Gwynn struck out just 188 times during the decade of the 90s.

With two outs & RISP Roberto Clemente hit .319/.402/.504 (1,035 PAs).

Rickey Henderson walked 796 times in his career when he was leading off an inning. That's more times than Lou Brock, Roberto Clemente, Luis Aparicio, Ernie Banks, Kirby Puckett, or Ryne Sandberg walked in their entire careers. Still can’t believe Rickey is gone…

Gordie Howe at age 50. Between the ages of 40-50 he scored 272 goals with 462 assists in 634 games.

1979: Wayne Gretzky at age 18…he had 104 points (43 goals, 61 assists) in 72 games in the WHA.

Kirill Kaprizov turns 28 today. Electric scorer & passer with my Minnesota Wild. Is averaging 1.21 points a game during his career (319 games).

Bill Wennington turns 62 today. Key role player on the second Jordan 3 peat Bulls. Had a reliable short little jumper.

Steve Lombardozzi turns 65 today. As the 2B for the ‘87 World Champion Minnesota Twins, my favorite team ever, he’s remembered fondly. Hit .344 with a .417 OBP that postseason!

Hack Wilson was born OTD in 1900. HOFer best remembered for his 1930 season when he hit .356/.454/.723 (OPS+ 177) with 56 HRs & 191 RBIs. Kirby Puckett idolized him & kept this photo in his locker of Hank.

Virgil Trucks was born OTD in 1917. Had a 17 year career started 328 games & appeared in 517 overall with a 3.28 ERA. Had 6 seasons with a ERA+ above 120. Pitched two no hitters, both in 1952. Veteran of WW II.

Amos Otis turns 78 today. Has 43 career WAR and is a 3 Gold Glove winner.

Aaron Judge turns 33 today. He has the 8th highest SLG of all time at .607 & is hitting .408 this season.

1984: Mario Lemieux scores his first career goal three minutes into his first game.

OTD in 1980 the USA hockey team demolishes Romania 7-2 in the Olympics. Neal Broten (loved him) scored the 6th goal. Team USA has West Germany in two days…
