They called the targeting of brown people of another faith and erosion of civil liberties the β€œpatriot” act so you would feel guilty or fearful for being against it. So you would adopt an us versus them mindset. You were being groomed for autocratic rule all along.

This is what the Israelis and their apologists call a targeted, anti-terror campaign.

This is Rafah today.

The idea that race is a social & historical construct has a long history. It was a central plank of the post WWII US consensus for obvious reasons given what pseudo-scientific racism had wrought. One of the central planks of the US right in the post WWII era was that race is a biologically reality.

I’m not judging individual scholars for leaving the US for theoretically safer universities.

I’m judging the rest of you for not noticing or caring that roughly 75% of your adjunctified colleagues have neither the putative protection of academic freedom nor the means to leave.

As a Jewish faculty member at one of these institutions, I am saying right now, in the clearest tones possible: not in my name. This violent exploitation of Jews as an alibi for achieving Fascist ends is itself textbook antisemitism.

A lesson from my spouse, whose work (b4 leaving academics) focused on contemporary Islamic movements: follow the in/justice. Stevenson notes early on that Ahmed Yassin, Hamas' founder, 'ran a civic religious organisation to provide social services the Israeli occupation neglected or destroyed'.

Very excited that my article on the history of Orthodox Christian-Muslim relations has now been published in Religion Compass; it summarizes my approach to this history and illustrates what I think are its most poignant and profound dimensions.

Holiness doesn't have a surname In graduate school I wrote a doctoral thesis about a collection of medieval texts originally written in southern Spain.

Durmaz' book provoked a number of personal responses, which I did not include in my review. I did, however, reflect on these in a piece I called 'Holiness doesn't have a surname', which appeared in my Substack newsletter: charlestieszen.substack.com/p/holiness-d...

It covers material from Central and Eastern Europe (1800-1914). Originally, material from Russia was meant to be in the same volume. But relevant texts/authors were in such abundance that we had to split the volume in 2. CMR23, focusing on Russia, should appear in the spring of 2025.
