Drawing in pencil crayon of an old stone building that's probably a church with power lines and pigeons in the sky above it and handwritten text that reads: "We're casting spells, casting shadows. We are casting a wide net. We're making something out of nothing, making do, making amends."

Drawing in pencil crayon of a cat looking out a window surrounded by house plants. Out the window, there's a loose outline of a winter landscape. Handwritten text reads: "We set up camp in our bedrooms and kitchens. We huddle around the kettle as the cold closes in. And as the walls inch inwards, we tell our own fortunes, detail our grand, expansive futures."

Small Desecration on this Ugly Street

I thought we had an understanding.
The sunflower that inexplicably
took root in the smallest crack
in the sidewalk on King street,
the one we watched grow over
the summer, wondering
if it could really be what we
thought it was, if those leaves really
denoted a domesticated, annual species,
traveller from somebody’s garden by
mysterious means,
			until it bloomed,
slowly opening itself up to us,
this bright, solar centre of gravity
unwrapped like a present,
having decided,
despite the road’s proximity
that we could be trusted,
us,
the community,
us—

I thought we had an understanding
not to touch.

Small Apocalypse in the Back of the Sushi Restaurant For nearly a year after the fire, the building just sits there like a black egg cracked open; like a cake that someone has dug into with their whole fist, sprawling chocolate organs;

like a sitcom set,
one wall peeled back,
everything at odd angles,
on display for the audience;
like a dollhouse with all of its
little pieces intact—
the mattress on the floor
like so many student apartments,
the posters on the wall
charred a flat black.
A bottle of hot sauce perches
on a teetering board and though
the building went up in a
matter of minutes, the bottle
is now an unmovable fact
that no wind or rain or snow
displaces.
Hanging dresses still haunt
the closet like ghosts,
fluttering and faceless.
