Still too early for the boats to be in the water but it’ll be here soon enough. Can’t wait for the early spring hatches to mark the official start of fly fishing on the upper lake.

My favorite CCC-era cabin, built by the U.S. Forest service in the ‘30s. Now our little museum.

The early hatch will begin in a couple of months off the point of Bartoo Island, which we see to the right. It begins the lake fly fishing season and can be epic. Fingers crossed.

Gorgeous morning up here.

That’s been my experience. 😉 And I love those streamer takes!

Two of my favorites. But yeah, there are so many ways to approach the two hander. Streamers are but one. And one I’d recommend. Otherwise, I’d suggest the lightest lines and longest leaders you can effectively cast. Don’t shy away from letting a dry swing. You oughtta’ come up to Idaho for a visit.

It’s certainly a much different feel and cadence than say a 7- or 8-weight Skagit setup for steelhead. I’ve been playing with short- and mid-sized heads for aerial trout spey casting. It can be a deadly technique but again, as I think you’re intimating, it feels like something altogether different.

A mix of favorite streamer patterns (fly fishing flies) for spey and single-hand applications. Sculpin, balanced leech, and variations on a theme.

Lost a good sized tree a night or so back to a decent little dump of snow, providing a window toward the meadow. Like a lost tooth. “We need it” (it, being snowpack of any measure) is both true and exhausting. Spring would be okay with me.

Putting together my early spring streamer box following more than a dusting of snow in the front yard.

One can dream, am I right?

The most disgusting group of looters, losers, and miscreants imaginable. Just gross.

Gorgeous. And there I go again, smashing that “Like” button when the underlying subject matter pisses me off.

Agreed and right there with you, my man. We’re looking into what it might take to do more screenings in the states.

Fingers crossed for all up there. It all affects everything, of course. Fishing, while an economic generator (and a joyful pursuit) is likely one of the less important outcomes. But as we know, the fish are an indicator of what’s right or not in any system.

I likely won’t guide past June here in northern Idaho, if at all. Will likely guide the salmonfly hatch on the Deschutes in Oregon and steelhead in the fall. But who knows?

I really don’t “like” this info. Aarne, but the like button seems the only response. We’re in the same boat where I am. No snow. I’m worried about fire season here, come August (or before).

Spring feels as though it’s sprung early this year up here. But it’s hard not to be a bit excited by the early season fly fishing prospects. Can’t wait to get the boats back in the water.

This morning at the resort. Spring, it feels, may have sprung.

Fly fishing for steelhead and the occasional gift that is the sea-run cutthroat.

This little sea-run wasn’t quite as bright as some others, but shone nonetheless.

A welcome alternative to the current amped up formula of fly fishing film tours? We’ll need to see.
