Santos, University of London Across the world, political parties are incorporating social movement strategies and frames. In this study, we pivot from the dominant focus on party characteristics to analyze drivers of support for movement parties in six European countries. We report results from a choice-based conjoint survey experiment showing that contrary to previous research, movement party voters favor neither candidates who are institutional outsiders nor those who actively participate in protests.

In this paper, we show that authoritarian dissidents hold divergent attitudes towards democracy and identify a key bloc within the regime opposition: “non-democratic critics” (NDCs) or those who are dissatisfied with the current regime but resist adopting democracy.

Liberal Democracy Reexamined: Leo Strauss on Alexis de Tocqueville Liberal Democracy Reexamined: Leo Strauss on Alexis de Tocqueville By Raúl Rodríguez, Michigan State University This article explores Leo Strauss’s thoughts on Alexis de Tocqueville in his 1954 “Natural Right” course transcript. One of the significant features of this transcript is that it contains an original interpretation and tentative critique of Tocqueville’s political philosophy. Although Strauss considered Tocqueville to be an indispensable observer of modern liberal democracy, he saw significant limits to Tocqueville’s thought.

Facing Democratic Challenges: The Role of Civil Society Organizations in the Governance of Genomic Technologies Facing Democratic Challenges: The Role of Civil Society Organizations in the Governance of Genomic Technologies By Federica Frazzetta, University of Catania and Andrea Felicetti, University of Padua The discovery of CRISPR has fuelled the debate surrounding new genomic techniques (NGTs). This is of paramount importance given their potential impact on societies and ecosystems. Despite early enthusiasm about the potential of NGTs to “democratize” genome editing, it is increasingly evident that their introduction poses substantial challenges from a democratic point of view.
