Abolishing Compulsory Voting: The 2024 Experience in the Flemish Region of Belgium Abolishing Compulsory Voting: The 2024 Experience in the Flemish Region of Belgium By Marc Hooghe, University of Leuven, and Dieter Stiers, University of Leuven There are few clear-cut examples of countries that have abolished or introduced compulsory voting. When the Netherlands abolished the system in 1971, Irwin (1974) documented how this led to a sharp reduction in voter turnout, especially among young people, women, and those with little political interest.

Why Are Some Parts of Africa Richer and More Peaceful Than Others? In the APSA Public Scholarship Program, graduate students in political science produce summaries of new research in the American Political Science Review. This piece, written by Deborah Saki, covers the new article by Martha Wilfahrt, University of California, Berkeley, "A Precolonial Paradox? Rethinking Political Centralization and Its Legacies". Why are some African countries doing better today than others? Why are some stuck in repeated conflict while their neighbors grow and stay calm?

Why are some African countries doing better today than others, prospering while others are in conflict? Martha Wilfahrt’s @apsrjournal article analyzes the nature of pre-colonial states for an answer. Read a clear discussion by @deborah_saki for Political Science Now

Defaulting to Inclusion: Producing Sample Datasets for the Global Data Science Classroom Defaulting to Inclusion: Producing Sample Datasets for the Global Data Science Classroom By Paul Musgrave, Georgetown University in Qatar Introductory courses in statistics and quantitative methods routinely use sample datasets to explain concepts and statistical commands. Many of these sample datasets, however, use parochial U.S. measurements (like "miles per gallon") that do not address the needs of international classrooms where metric units are more familiar.

Example datasets shouldn't use obscure measurements like "miles" per "gallon". Replace Stata's "auto" and R's "mtcars" with the new and open QCars dataset.

Through a survey of final year undergraduates, the research reveals that students recognize the theoretical connection between the two fields but struggle to see how political science applies in future professional settings.

Armenian economics students see the link between political science and economic policy but struggle to apply it. New research shows why interdisciplinary, practice-based learning is key for policymakers now.
