A line of sea-weathered wooden pilings on a sandy beach. The pings stand in pairs which recede into the distance where they meet a blue-green sea under a blue sky with white and grey clouds.

If Poll Tax was introduced now, there wouldn't be any riots. People would moan online but ultimately do nothing. The internet is a pressure valve that lets off just enough steam to sap our will to physically do something about a problem.

B&W photo. Pile of brash surrounded by small conifer saplings. Trunk of a standing deadwood looming in the mist beyond.
B&W photo. Trunk of a standing deadwood - line of still standing trees just visible in the fog behind.
Line of exposed roots of fallen conifers with two standing deadwood trees above.
Two small deciduous trees in a wide clearing in the forest - conifers just visible both sides. The summit of Bellever tor rises into the mist in the background.
There's few more unsettling places to be alone than a clear-felled forestry plantation in fog, but it's an odd paradox that despite their apocalyptic look, these deadzones are far more richly alive in wildlife and plants than the dense and darkly regimented rows of conifers which stood there before.

Today we just bimbled around bookshops and charity shops and avoided the wind. Power went off for a bit which prompted much fruitless hunting around our holiday rental house for the circuit breakers but it all came back on by itself before we had to resort to eating the weakest so that was nice.

Then, back for a week, before heading off to the Suffolk Coast for a week-long stroll.
