A line of sea-weathered wooden pilings on a sandy beach. The pings stand in pairs which recede into the distance where they meet a blue-green sea under a blue sky with white and grey clouds.

If Poll Tax was introduced now, there wouldn't be any riots. People would moan online but ultimately do nothing. The internet is a pressure valve that lets off just enough steam to sap our will to physically do something about a problem.

Or, looked at perhaps more cynically, an indicator of succes for politicians and nedia who are achieving exactly what they set out to do.

Keir Starmer: you are actually the leader of the Labour Party, so stop letting your every utterance and decision to be influenced by what Reform voters think. I don't give a fuck what Reform voters think. Deliver Labour policies, you fanny.

I am so heartened to read the unanimously negative responses to this incredibly dim-witted and tone-deaf "idea".

There's few more unsettling places to be alone than a clear-felled forestry plantation in fog, but it's an odd paradox that despite their apocalyptic look, these deadzones are far more richly alive in wildlife and plants than the dense and darkly regimented rows of conifers which stood there before.

Today we just bimbled around bookshops and charity shops and avoided the wind. Power went off for a bit which prompted much fruitless hunting around our holiday rental house for the circuit breakers but it all came back on by itself before we had to resort to eating the weakest so that was nice.

On family holiday. Someone asked the question "what's your favourite thing about Dave?" and the unanimous answer was "he's so calm".

Reader, I carry within me an incandescent rage equivalent in energy to the collision of neutron stars.

Are they blind? Or am I that good an actor?

Just four days of work to get through and then I'm off to Northumberland for a holiday (a part of the UK that, oddly, I've never visited before).
Then, back for a week, before heading off to the Suffolk Coast for a week-long stroll.

They were forewarned by a series of traumatic (yet fondly-remembered) Public Information Films of the 60s and 70s; if anything, they're better-equipped than anyone, thanks to "Say No to Sine!", "Sequencer Danger" and the classic horror "Dark Waveforms"
