Emma Reynolds speech at Labour Party Conference drew on the 'spirit of Kinder Trespass' as a core Labour value......
Could this be a sign of hope?

Food is wrecking the planet. And Europe has lost its appetite for change. A landmark study says food systems are breaching Earth’s limits. Europe once promised to lead the way, but the revolution fizzled.

β€œFood is at the heart of both human well-being and planetary health,” said co-chair Shakuntala Thilsted. β€œTransformation must go beyond producing enough calories. It must guarantee the right to food, fair work and a healthy environment for all.”

Senior Tories dismayed at Badenoch’s β€˜catastrophic’ vow to repeal Climate Change Act Theresa May, Alok Sharma, business and church leaders say plan would harm UK and not even Margaret Thatcher would have countenanced it

Kemi Badenoch's pledge to scrap the Climate Change Act has now been condemned by Theresa May, Lord Deben (John Gummer), Alok Sharma, the Confederation of British Industry, the Church of England, the Catholic Church - all previously mainstays of the Tory party: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Country diary: Searching for sanctuary, we find something else entirely | Eben Muse Drakes Broughton, Worcestershire: The scourge of rural litter is enough to bring anyone together, even a farmer and us, trying to camp for the night in his field

Lovely piece.

"As he drives off, waving, I wonder why this kind of interaction feels so rare, so unexpected, in the British countryside."

Well. Quite.

A Right to Roam and a Responsible Access Code could be the change.

Very well said. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

I'd also add: food is a commodity that we pay for at point of sale. Our taxes should be spent on public benefits, delivering multiple targets and helping save money across departments.

Fixing England’s water isn’t just the right thing to do – it can be the start of Labour’s fightback | Clive Lewis There is an appetite in this country for policy that will change lives. What is more fundamental than the water we use and bills we pay, asks Labour MP Clive Lewis

"The state of English water taps into something deep – something visceral. It has become a symbol of a rigged economy, a failed regulatory state, a political class that either can’t or won’t fix what it broke."

1. This is a thread about Horticultural Extrapolation. Not something you're likely to have thought about, but it's time some people did.
What is it? It's projecting the mechanics of fruit and veg growing onto the entire food system. It's surprisingly common, and frequently leads people astray. 🧡

Eye-opening graph. The biggest wildfire incidents in the UK don't occur when it's hottest, in high summer: they take place in April - *when landowners set fire to their grouse moors & lose control of burns.*

Time to ban moorland burning.

I see so many posts, here and elsewhere, about how we need to reframe or rethink rewilding to make it less divisive. I disagree. Firstly any new thing will create disagreement, that’s fine. Secondly, polling suggests people love the idea. The idea it’s super divisive is largely industry narrative.

I published these 10 & 12 years ago, when it seemed that frames like β€˜get rid of the green crap’ & environmental groups being lumped into an β€˜anti-growth coalition’ were on their way out. Truth is though that there is no growth on a polluted & degraded planet. Perhaps I’ll write new editions.
