So fist bump them if they made it. They may not get there again for awhile because this shit. is. hard.

They performed MAGIC to travel for this week. They perform magic to travel every time they have to go somewhere for work.
Going to these events is not easy- and the choices we often have to make is to NOT go.
Oh also it is effing daylight savings weekend and I drove 4 teens to a soccer game yesterday that took place in another state, in another time zone, for a kickoff time at 9:30am CT.
When you see a friend who is also the default parent this week- just fist bump them. This includes my Adam.
What is crazy is that- I AM SO GRATEFUL they are teens now.
The emotional chaos will be hard, but nothing compared to preschool and elementary school GDC trips.
I have been working on the plan to *just leave* for this week for 5 weeks- including prepping grocery trips and bulk grocery trips
I am participating in several GDC events this week, including an hour long talk. I am still doing biz dev while traveling. I have a full schedule.
This is what is is like to leave for 4 days during a school week.
Why is it so hard to go to conferences as a parent?
I took a picture of the face cream the boys should use if their skin gets dry and sent it to them and where they could find it.
I emailed the track coach for a midweek workout when the older teen will miss practice. I emailed all of the soccer coaches.
I started 3 different group chats with my mom and the friend's parents who are driving our kids around this week.
I made a 3 page schedule.
I remembered that the boy's favorite ice cream shop opens on the 11th and I left cash for them to go after school.
I prepped a weeks worth of after school snacks to get a kid enough calories to go to track practice.
We knocked out almost all of the laundry because you know what I am doing 12 hours after I get home on Friday?
I AM DRIVING TO ANOTHER STATE FOR A SOCCER GAME (Saturday morning, 3+ hours away)
I prepped 2 pasta dishes to 1) get the kids through late week in case they needed more food and 2) to help Adam out while he solos tonight before joining me later at GDC.
I prepped all lunch snacks, divided into 4 separate days for 2 kids.
In the last few days we have:
1) Prepped the house for grandma to move in for the week.
2) Arranged carpool to non-overlapping soccer schedules
3) arranged carpool for high school track schedules
4) arranged transportation to a band concert
5) prepped documentation on all of the above
They also both need to eat like 3000+ calories a day. Do you know how much food that is?
Holy hell it is so much food.
Oh and we have dogs.
So
1) they have a TON of stuff due- end of 9 week projects, assignments they missed if they fell behind, unit tests, etc
2) the start of multiple outdoor season sports.
3) I am the maestra of this carpooling transportation and school year chaos.
This week also is the first week of hs track season! So not only is it the first week of outdoor travel soccer season for both of them- the older one has 5 days of middle distance track training for 2 hours everyday.
The end of their 3rd 9 week quarter is coming up in 2ish weeks too!
The Salts-kids are teens now- 7th and 9th grade. One is taller than Adam and the other recently woke up taller than me.
They attend one of the highest rated middle and high schools in the country and their classwork is no joke. They also are athletes and have 9487 practices each week.
Parent thread on what it was like to prep our house so we could leave for GDC for an abbreviated week (I can't even go for the full 5+ days.
Why? Because representation matters and I (we) busted my/our ass(es) to get this circus scheduled so the schedule wouldn't go up in flames while we are away.
You: 1:20 400m run. pffttt. that's pathetic
Me: I am a 45 year old mom of 2 teens sprinting through an airport with a backpack on... I will make that damn plane.
Everyone else is putting together their lovely lookbooks for their GDC fits.
I am like- which pants won't get in the way as I throw down a 1:20 400m run in Detroit Metro before I hit those effing escalators which I will have to run down AND THEN up- how can I prevent the bag straps from chafing...
Hi it's me, a middle aged soccer mom, currently min maxing her outfit in case she has to... let's see...
*sprint through another damn airport, clocking an 800m run time that she hasn't run since high school, with a backpack on, to make her connection, to get to GDC today*
Where else will I be?
Probs walking back and forth through the park 9467 times on my way from one place to the next.
My schedule is slightly lighter than normal this year on purpose (which means it is likely 5x more busy that a regular person) which means I might be able to actually say hi?
I will be doing things at GDC this year!
1) I am giving a 60 minute talk! schedule.gdconf.com/session/insi...
2) I am judge at GDC pitch (again): gdconf.com/gdc-pitch/
3) I will be attending Adam's talk! schedule.gdconf.com/session/corg...
See you at the show!
I've been running gdcparties.com for a few years now. Some shitty company BlueberryAI decided they'd just take all the source code for the work I've done and reskin it, advertising it as their own. Jokes on them...it was still linked to my events spreadsheet, and now their website looks like this ๐

yeah I've got the youngest year a Z can be and an alpha. Sorry, my gen Z kid doesn't know anything about any of this.
This feels like the enshitification on Millennials that has continued for decades even though we are old af now. Yes conservativeness is increasing, but these are also kids.
I don't talk about my kids much online because they are teens now and mostly I would just yell about soccer anyways.
But I've been thinking about their personalities and today I was like, yeah so that one is more like a semi truck hitting black ice on a freeway and yeah.
yup. 10/10. no notes.
Have we time traveled back to the 2010s? Are we here again?

If they mess her up- or mess up her match and house- I will be so sad. Some of the sweetest and funniest scenes in the whole series are in that book.
