Any narratives/rhetorics on invasive species management/eradication/marketing folks want to share their projects? (and thanks Hal Herzog for the title😁)

Oh it just came out: I wrote this short essay shortly after the research trip in Aotearoa recalling a very.. strange.. experience of a field day catching wallabies. Three were caught that day, many let go because they weren’t big enough. I still think about them sometimes. 🫧

What is "human-like" depends on where humans live And why it matters for conservation

Anthropomorphizing is...a tough topic. For scientists and writers! Because the thing is: Animals aren't just like us. They don't see the world the way we do.

But also people don't want to CONSERVE something they don't identify with. brookshire-team-trash.beehiiv.com/p/what-is-hu...

The past 5 weeks I’ve been in different forests (“the bush”) in Aotearoa New Zealand’s North Island. Studying “invasive” and protected animals control/monitoring and the role of kindness in killing, emotions in science.. How can you not be emotional in such beauty??

Learnt so much about Coypu, knotweed, phylloxera, discourses that I didn’t know before about invasivising domesticates etc. so wonderful. I finally wrote something about my Troubled Care project for the first time - so much fun!

Just saw that the #ESEH2025 deadline has been extended to Nov 15, so there's still plenty of time to propose an abstract for our (@katiekung.bsky.social + me!) panel on 'Vegetal (hi)stories: more-than-human narratives of invasion and belonging' 🌿🌺
