Killing as care work?
I wrote this short article for 4S Backchannel, where I outlined some ways to examine killing and care by analysing kindness and the work of killing invasive species for conservation purposes, based on observations I made during my field trip in Aotearoa.

A cautionary tale to tell my two cats tonight, after brushing their teeth...

Tensions between hatred and kindness, killing and nurturing can exist in the same space.. it's important that they have the space to co-exist.

Also interesting - the interviewee (NZ Conservation Minister) having multiple cats as pets himself still easily describes them as stone-cold and noxious. What does it say about conservation commonsense?

Interesting how the difference between feral and companion cats is emphasised to be obvious - reminds me of Mr Black, caught as feral, purring and snuggling after 2 months, and the kittens whose mum was killed, then turned domestic enough and adopted. How wild is wild, how domestic is domestic?

Oh it just came out: I wrote this short essay shortly after the research trip in Aotearoa recalling a very.. strange.. experience of a field day catching wallabies. Three were caught that day, many let go because they weren’t big enough. I still think about them sometimes. 🫧

Anthropomorphizing is...a tough topic. For scientists and writers! Because the thing is: Animals aren't just like us. They don't see the world the way we do.
