Some ideas were presented at the "greenwork" workshop and panel at the 4S conference by Hannah Rogers and Matthew Eisler, many thanks for polishing my ideas and to Mardi for editing!π

Killing Kindly: Invasive Species, Care, and Greenwork in Aotearoa New Zealand
Killing as care work?
I wrote this short article for 4S Backchannel, where I outlined some ways to examine killing and care by analysing kindness and the work of killing invasive species for conservation purposes, based on observations I made during my field trip in Aotearoa.

I titled an article for submission with something rather cringey, because -> certain pressure, also because of my 0 creativity. One of the peer reviews said βhonestly itβs so cringe sorry not sorryβ. THANK YOU. With your permission Iβm empowered.
Just wanted to spit it out before bed time π

One of the best things being an editor for @envhistnow.bsky.social is to have the pleasure (+luck!) to work with texts like this.
Iβve learnt fr and resonated so much with @critical-lycan.bsky.social A beautiful piece meditating on the (exclusionary..) taxonomies of species and sexology. Go read!

Thanks so much for the invite and letting me ramble about traps and death and care and killing βpestβ animals. such a great time (not so much for the dead animals mentioned, always acknowledged). I was very inspired by the variety of expertise!

Tensions between hatred and kindness, killing and nurturing can exist in the same space.. it's important that they have the space to co-exist.

Also interesting - the interviewee (NZ Conservation Minister) having multiple cats as pets himself still easily describes them as stone-cold and noxious. What does it say about conservation commonsense?

'Stone cold killer' feral cats added to Predator Free 2050 strategy, Conservation Minister announces
After initially suggesting feral cats stay out of the Predator Free plan, the government has done a U-turn, announcing they are now a target.
Interesting how the difference between feral and companion cats is emphasised to be obvious - reminds me of Mr Black, caught as feral, purring and snuggling after 2 months, and the kittens whose mum was killed, then turned domestic enough and adopted. How wild is wild, how domestic is domestic?

Oh it just came out: I wrote this short essay shortly after the research trip in Aotearoa recalling a very.. strange.. experience of a field day catching wallabies. Three were caught that day, many let go because they werenβt big enough. I still think about them sometimes. π«§

What is "human-like" depends on where humans live
And why it matters for conservation
Anthropomorphizing is...a tough topic. For scientists and writers! Because the thing is: Animals aren't just like us. They don't see the world the way we do.
But also people don't want to CONSERVE something they don't identify with. brookshire-team-trash.beehiiv.com/p/what-is-hu...
