Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

I wish I lived in a country where people actually vetted the people they vote for.

They Did This to Us Homes are burning. Lives are destroyed. This isn't the weather. And it didn't just happen. It was done by people and it was done on purpose.

Because theyโ€™re Black, they must be looting? This isnโ€™t an honest mistake.

Spread truth, not lies: These folks werenโ€™t looters. This footage is from KTLA, where the homeowner explained that her brothers & friends were helping her move belongings out of her burned house.

Raging fires in Southern California have destroyed or damaged thousands of homes and other buildings and consumed thousands of acres. Hereโ€™s how you can help the victims. nyti.ms/40tBuww

Been getting a lot of people asking about LA geography concerned that the images they see means the entire county is on fire. That's understandable.

But LA is a big place. So, to give an idea of scale it's time to cart this out again. It's a map of LA with other cities superimposed on it.

I know we all have disaster fatigue, but the reason why historic LA fires get so much coverage is because there are more people in greater LA county than in *most US states*

President Joe Biden: "I'm announcing that the federal government will cover 100% of the cost of measures to protect lives and property in Southern California for six months. Iโ€™ve told the Governor and officials to spare no expense and do whatever they need to contain the fires and protect families."

From the very moment these fires in Los Angeles broke out, President Biden has been there for California.

I am deeply grateful for the President's continued support and commitment to help contain these wildfires and provide Californians the resources they need.

FACT-CHECK: โ€œFundamentally, it is not correct LADWP refused to properly fill the reservoir needed to fight the fireโ€ฆ At no time during this fire has there been a shortage of water in Southern California.โ€

Things we need more of: actual boring nuanced experts who are measured and explain things

Things we need less of: reactionary and confidently incorrect people with loud ass opinions

But in its panicked retreat from the system it spent years building, Meta may now be putting billions of users at risk. Just because Meta deleted that line about hateful speech causing offline violence doesn't mean it isn't true. And now the company has all but declared open season on immigrants, transgender people and whatever other targets that Trump and his allies find useful in their fascist project.

"I can't tell you how much harm comes from non-illegal but harmful content," a longtime former trust and safety employee at the company told me. The classifiers that the company is now switching off meaningfully reduced the spread of hate movements on Meta's platforms, they said. "This is not the climate change debate, or pro-life vs. pro-choice. This is degrading, horrible content that leads to violence and that has the intent to harm other people."

I talked to 10 current and former Meta employees about the company's surrender to the right on speech issues. All were upset. One person called the changes "a precursor to genocide" www.platformer.news/meta-fact-ch...

You *really* need to see the side-by-side comparison to fully appreciate the differences. Especially if you don't get why people are saying that the Kissinger statement is cold.

It will always be Young Ned of the Hill for me, with If I Should Fall from Grace With God a close second. But Lorelei is top 10. So much good music.
