I also think this has something to do with both of these being a pastime of a bygone era, machines that need upkeep, etc. Both activities are amazing in Japan (imo), where they haven’t lost popularity the same way as in the states.

I feel like bowling is a vastly different experience depending on the venue, and many don’t put in the work to make the experience worth doing. I feel similarly about arcades, but often it’s less pronounced there than with bowling.

UFO50 lands on the switch LATER TODAY, maybe even by the time you read this. this game has now joyously commanded great swathes of my attention for the better part of a year — mainly on a steamdeck bc it’s such an ideal portable experience. if you have a switch but not UFO50, it’s a huge day for you

We, like you, were curious about what real-time mechanical use cases there were for this tech, but at the time there were no examples at all for mechanics using image gen, so we ran our own experiment.

Then we would create a bespoke animated video out of the chosen image and use it as a jumping off point for how the plot moved forward. This was a fun early experiment in how the tech might be used, but the generative element was a piece of what was largely a very manually made game.

When we ran Bureau for Multiversal Arbitration back in 2022, players took the role of Arbiters at a Multiversal agency trying to solve issues that plagued the agency each week, proposing solutions to these problems in the form of generated images. The best solution would be picked by player vote…

You’re on the money, Sam. I think many people assume a lot about Ebert’s thoughts on the medium based on a pull quote or two taken out of context. Real ones have read his article gushing about Cosmology of Kyoto and understand that he had love and respect for the art and craft of games.

In this installment, Nemo awakens to find Flip sleeping next to him in bed. The legs on the bed start to grow and then moving, carrying them outside Nemo’s house onto the street. The legs keep growing, eventually surpassing the hallway building in the city in height. Finally, the collapse, sending Nemo and Flip falling. In the final panel, Nemo awakens for real to find he has fallen out of bed.
