Took my dogs out at 5:30am and one of the garages was open, so I closed it. Came out again at seven and BOTH garages were open. I told my landlord and we were both creeped out.

Later she found the remote on the floor, where her cats had been playing with it for hours.

Swung by the joyous #NoKings on Hollywood Blvd and I'm LOVING all the frogs and inflatable unicorns, but it's the footage of vibrant protests in small towns and red states that really made my day.

Antifascist resistance is a huge theme in the novel I'm writing. I wonder what drew me to that topic? No way to know really.

Jammies threw an absolute tantrum when Pam and Oscar eventually left her alone with me, but she was calm by the time we got home. Four weeks later, she's starting to decide I'm not so bad — and Pam and Oscar have stopped by twice for play dates. I'm just glad she's safe.

Suddenly a bush started frantically howling. Pam went towards the howl and after a minute or two of back-and-forth dog communication, Jammies ran out and started joyously jumping up on Pam. Oscar saved the day.

On Day 10, I got a call. A woman had seen her that morning about half a mile up the road from our scent spot. Pam and Oscar and I showed up that evening and put a rotisserie chicken on the roof of Pam's car. Nothing happened until a man with two little yippie dogs came by, and Oscar barked.

But there was no sign of Jammies. Mike said she'd probably gone somewhere with fewer people. Rangers took down my flyers near the trail, then made us strike our scent spot. So every day I'd drive in at sunrise, park my car, flyer it, and bike home. It got harder and harder to stay optimistic.

On Day 3, someone saw her near the spot and called, but after that, nothing. Mike hung a motion sensor camera and every day I'd sift through hundreds of clips of grass and branches blowing in the wind, delighted when something interesting would enter the frame, like a squirrel.

We painted a scent line into the park with a huge smelly dot in a specific spot to tell Jammies, "This is the place! Find us here!" She hadn't bonded to me yet, so we hung blankets and a T-shirt belonging to her former fosters, Pam (human) and Oscar (dog), and they spent hours there over the week.

Mike took for granted we'd find her eventually, and less from a place of faith than a place of, 'I've devoted every waking hour to dog rescue for the past 14 years; I know what I'm talking about. She's resilient, he told me, and she won't go down without a fight.

How We Rescued Jammies - part 1 of 8

A friend or two has confessed that when Jammies ran away in Griffith Park, they never thought I'd get her back. I can relate. Had Angel City #pitbulls not introduced me to Mike Noon of Catching Paws, I don't know what I would have done.

I'm writing a mystery novel and I'm mostly LOVING the process, but mornings I'm often full of dread and reluctant to start. Once I start working, it's fun again, and I think, this is great! Surely tomorrow I will not feel dread!

And then, dread.

"Discovery" is fluid.

The barrier held. There was a bold and naked attack on free speech, and it failed. There are other attacks and more fighting to do AND I'm gonna take a few breaths to just celebrate the win.

It's Friday night and I'm drunk and high and re-watching Moonflower Murders with the summaries in front of me and taking extensive notes, including musical transitions, cuz I know how to FUCKING PARTY!!!!!

I had the BEST time at Left Coast Crime, AND it's taken me a week to recover. #SeaLevelIntrovert

Apparently I'm here now.
