My father-in-law retired from academia in the β€˜90’s. I don’t think he recognise the profession now and would be dismayed to hear how staff are struggling these days.

Agree. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... and also my own theory of mental gravity. Mood is high/low and stable/unstable and I think this encodes value of emotional self-world relations using physical analogues (inertia, momentum, gravity, etc).
