Violinist Pekka Kuusisto is not afraid to ruffle a few feathers On his new album, the violinist completely rethinks The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and leans into old folk songs with the help of Sam Amidon.

I always appreciate Tom Huizinga when he's on NPR Music programming.

This piece is beautifully, and fittingly, written about an incredible album released just yesterday.

Willows, by violinist Pekka Kuusisto, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, and the wonderful Sam Amidon on vocals.

Lovely new album from Pekka Kuusisto featuring @samamidon.bsky.social and others.

Reminds me of my mum taking me to hear Pekka play @nicomuhly.com in Cambridge with the @brittensinfonia.bsky.social and her excitement at hearing his playing.

Recommended.

I thought I'd heard my dad's voice for the last time. A movie helped me find it again A period drama, a Supreme Court case and voice our film critic hadn't heard in decades.

A beautiful article about the writer's search for his father's voice, inspired by his viewing of the film The History Of Sound.

My parents, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, made a series of classic albums of folk music for children and families in the 80s and 90s. You can now find them on bandcamp! amidonmusicpublishing.bandcamp.com

Part of the reason I hate people doing their cultural reviews of the year in November is that every now and again the must beautiful song of the year gets released in December. This is an absolute gem from @samamidon.bsky.social and Ganavya, so heartfelt and healing.

β€˜Magical’: how I taught Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor to sing like folk troubadours in The History of Sound Singer-songwriter Sam Amidon had just three weeks to make the two stars sound like seasoned balladeers. He recalls their charged harmonies in the little shed at the bottom of his garden

The History of Sound is out now in the UK and streamable on Mubi and elsewhere in the US. Here's a piece I just wrote for the Guardian about my experience working on the
film:

Top 20: Sam Amidon β€” Salt River Dusted review I've been a big fan of Sam's work since Stylus days, and if I was trying to figure out my favourite album of the 00s, his All Is Well is where I'd start looking. So I'm saying something....

Top 20: Sam Amidon - Salt River

Not sure any other record this year made me feel the sense of peace this one did. Friends and neighbours, that's where it's at.

I can't be bothered to do an End of Year playlist, and it would be mostly Cameron Winter anyway, but just to say that two records I think deserved more love in everyone's lists are the Mac Demarco album Guitar, and Sam Amidon's Salt River ❀️
