Not sure but 3x should do it and would be much more usuable with large samples, there is one for Β£18.99 might give that a try.

RFI: does anyone out there use one of those large angle-poised magnifying glasses for sorting through pitfall trap samples? Was thinking of getting one, and as ever there's a vast range available, so wondered if anyone had recommendations. What magnification do you use? Thanks.

Can't help with suggestions, but great idea. Always struggling with too high magnification through the microscope.

The sap-run dwelling larva of Brachyopa insensilis is one of the more distinctive in the genus and can be identified in the field, especially with a 10x hand lens. Other hoverfly species also inhabit sap runs, so if your larva doesn't match this one, the references provided may assist. #hoverflies

A picture taken through clear water, showing lots of small green spheres coating the bottom.

I've been sent some images of green spheres from a dyke in the River Ant section of the Norfolk Broads in case I recognised the species - presumably either algae or cyanobacteria. Unfortunately I don't know the answer, does anyone recognise them? @brianecambs.bsky.social @freshwaterbio.bsky.social?
