This is the most obvious subtweet: Even if an LLM *were* capable of developing a mind, of being human, why would we want that? There are billions of humans already here. It might be nice to spend some money on their potential. But that doesn't mint money for the elite and get techbros excited.

I continue to be on vacation--otherwise known as filling in footnotes like "cite case that proves this" while in a foreign country. Today there was a massive far-right march outside. The poison is everywhere. Different languages, same lies. Anti-vax and Russian flags. I'm running low on hope.

I am on vacation abroad where, as we all know, we relax and disconnect by editing and footnoting papers for faculty. The web version of Word is actually getting worse. A thing I did not think was possible. Once, it was just the inability to do small caps. We've progressed to bizarre autoformatting.

If I could pick one nonstructural thing to nix in politics, it would be the weird parasocial relationships people (on both sides) have been forming with politicians. Politics takes a certain kind of personality--extroverted, approval-driven, overly confident. Most of these people are absolute dicks.

As a newly minted Old, I just wanted to say that the adjustment to progressive lenses could be going better. I had a 1L try to show me stuff on his computer and I spent 45 minutes pretending I could read it.

I don't think you should work after a red-eye. My best actually isn't good enough.

I'll listen to your What If idea and bring you a 10-page outline of cases and articles based on my ideas that might help you move forward. If a student is having trouble, I'm going to identify where they went wrong AND ask how they're doing outside of school. AI doesn't care. I do.

So, my post-AALL thoughts on AI. 1) We gotta start talking about other stuff. 2) The answer to why librarians over AI is more than info accuracy and ethics. Our humanity matters! I can tell you that your question is mis-framed or that I've spotted a trend in the research.

Some people to to conferences for the swag or the bar crawls. I go to spend my nights with pizza, wine, and SVU marathons. Being basic is underrated.

Update to my earlier post: I'm basically an extra from TWD right now. Thanks AA. Always a pleasure. But at least I wasn't in the rows that got thrown up on.

(And probably for the same price...) But, you're completely right. I've never been there and new is good.

On a lighter note: I don't understand how I can hate the process of traveling this much while still claiming to love traveling. My mind is just a buzzing repetition of "call Uber, buy drink, get on plane, arrive, call Uber, see what's still open on Doordash, order dinner, shower...." So boring.

I am convinced that telling them this (repeatedly) is the single biggest waste of my time. I test whether they're doing it every semester and crickets all around.

As someone who has yet to contribute a useful thought on social media: I was thinking today about how much I miss video stores. They made my world so much richer. Streaming is just an entirely different experience.

I would if I could. I'm really pretty concerned for you and I wonder if it wouldn't be to your benefit to take a short vacation, destination undisclosed. These people are terrifying and they're getting off on making this more and more real.

What's disappointing is that it's mostly blank edges at this point. They should have started with those and kept the suspense going longer.

Every day, I log on and I see, "NO ONE IS COVERING XYZ." You wouldn't know about it if it weren't being covered. The two biggest papers are not doing the work well, but there are thousands of journalists who are. The info is out there and your actual concern is the info literacy of other people.

Years ago, my boss made me share mine with a coworker so he could hear the sound quality of my Nano. I still think about it and cringe.

Instead of teaching people why immigration is a net positive socially and economically, let's just all agree that we need to drastically reduce immigration. (File under: I do not understand politicians at all.)

Solid analysis. It does feel that way. (I fully admit I have my own nonsense I feel strongly if not rationally about.) Sometimes I wonder how much of this is law librarians--having been treated as inferior--finding an area of undisputed expertise and latching on with fingers and toes.
