my fave US healthcare moment was in 2020 when insurance tried to claim that I needed to pay thousands because I hadn't gotten prior approval for anesthesia used during emergency surgery

evidence-based as a concept has been well and truly bungled, it was a nice idea though

Endo Days | Jess McAllen Celebrity endometriosis surgeons have flourished by offering supposed cures in an environment of misinformation and false promises.

ten days post surgery for advanced endometriosis and I decided it was a good time to re-read what I wrote about my recent experience being diagnosed in 2023 + how US Healthcare motivates surgeons double as influencers

In Poor Health | Jess McAllen Affiliation in New York City hospitals was meant to improve careβ€”and lower costs. But that hasn’t quite worked out.

an excellent essay about the affiliate system in NYC public hospitals, mainly how contracting with private, often-university affiliated hospitals made organizing near impossible while simultaneously running up costs and cratering the quality of care.

I went to New Jersey because a lot of the top specialists in nyc don't take insurance so they can charge tens of thousands (it sucks!) and found a great in network surgeon but also this hospital has a room service huge menu where they bring u actual yum food. It is unreal!

In Poor Health | Jess McAllen Affiliation in New York City hospitals was meant to improve careβ€”and lower costs. But that hasn’t quite worked out.

In 1961, Ray Trussell was appointed as New York City’s hospital commissioner. You might not know his name, but you shouldβ€”as @jessmcallen.bsky.social reports, he fundamentally transformed how the city’s hospital system works.

In Poor Health | Jess McAllen Affiliation in New York City hospitals was meant to improve careβ€”and lower costs. But that hasn’t quite worked out.

Affiliation contracts were intended to improve careβ€”and lower costsβ€”at New York City’s public β€œsafety-net” hospitals by pairing them up with private nonprofit institutions. But as @jessmcallen.bsky.social reports, it hasn’t panned out that way.
