Game of Thrones (kidding, though it is + the latest spinoff series was excellent)

I honestly haven’t loved much of the tv I’ve finished lately. Been having a better movie run.

Slow Horses is probably my favorite of newer shows. I enjoyed Task (for the most part). The Beast in Me held my attention?

yeah I can see that, too. And I was being heavy-handed in the opening take here, but it's just very much not for me, I guess, and I think the hype is way overblown now that I've watched 10+ episodes. But to each their own!

haha good to know! And yeah I hear that on realism then, I thought you more so meant that all of those events couldn't possibly happen in one day, like with 24 back in the day

27.02.2026 17:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Whether it’s realistic or not is not my issue though. How damn corny and cringey 80 percent of the dialogue is is my issue, among others.

Yeah that’s fair. I just think it’s lowest common denominator stuff and not really befitting of a top-billing show on HBO. I also realize I went in with high expectations because of my trust in HBO (historically) and how much friends like it. And it’s just a big old flop for me.

Oh shit that’s right

27.02.2026 15:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I’m not looking for reality. I’m looking for dialogue that’s not the wittiest, corniest, lowest common denominator line every time someone opens their mouth.

I’m catching up on The Pitt, almost finished with the first season, and … *ahem* … we all agree this is an objectively bad show that also happens to be pretty addicting?

Like I’ll keep watching!

But it’s bad.

(Newsroom-style bad, to evoke another HBO flop)

Widespread Thoughts on why a story about competitive spreadsheet-ing really resonated.

I wrote recently about why I think this story β€” on competitive Excel β€” has resonated with so many people (and so many different types of people, not the usual sports fans/casuals who read my work): open.substack.com/pub/colleges...

Extremely cool to have my last story for the Washington Post featured by @longreads.com:

Can't wait to read @jacobbogage.bsky.social, my first beat partner and desk mate at the Post, at his next stop.

From his announcement today:

β€œWe had it so good, didn’t we?” I texted Jesse last week.

β€œYeah, we really, really did,” he wrote back.

Rebrand This is the same newsletter except for the ways in which it is now different.

I have rebranded my free newsletter as By Jesse Dougherty.

Consider it an open-ended thing, going with the post-layoff winds, starting ... uh ... now?

More on that here. I'd love it if you subscribed (or stuck with it if you already do): collegesportsmoney.substack.com/p/rebrand

Will Lewis’s exit is long overdue. His legacy will be the attempted destruction of a great American journalism institution. But it's not too late to save The Post. Jeff Bezos must immediately rescind these layoffs or sell the paper to someone willing to invest in its future.
