A child on the farm in the Jim Crow South, he continued his love for tending to the land well into adulthood. My father farmed for nearly 35 years. Tobacco, corn, peanuts, and soybeans grew wonderfully under his thumb. He didn’t encounter a field or garden that wouldn’t yield to his intent. The intent that he had with his work carried over into being my daddy. I find peace in knowing that I was able to experience a love so strong from the first man I ever encountered. I remember driving my little pink Corvette in the yard of our seven bedroom home that he had built himself. He would be on the tractor cutting grass and I would be in heaven.
