it's only compounded by the nature of their professions: bert being constantly surrounded by happy younger couples that are a mirror of what reiner could have, and reiner who works a dangerous service job that means he might already have limited time as it is

the beginning is rocky and there's a constant guilt/reservation on bert's part about wasting reiner's youth, the idea that he should be spending his prime with someone more suitable and can provide more than an old man like him

bertholdt is a very beloved, caring, and competent professor, and he has a gentle way of leading others that reiner can't help but be entranced by. but there's a loneliness there that draws him in too. after finding out bert is single, reiner shoots his shot and gets a yes

said firefighter keeps popping up in his life after that and finds opportunities to come visit him until they eventually become close- i.e. reiner keeps "happening to be jogging" in the park where bert likes to eat his lunch until "hey do you want to grab a drink sometime haha"
