JosΓ© Vilson: Good Math Education Is a βCivil Rightβ
The middle school math teacher, author, and lecturer, on holding high expectations for every child and prioritizing mathematics in the same way we do literacy.
Excellent perspective from @thejosevilson.com pushing back on community-building as a βsoft skillβ in math learning:
βThere is nothing 'soft' about trying to build community. Itβs actually hard to figure out whatβs going on w/ a particular student that isnβt allowing them to connect to a problem.β

We found that a racially-affirming community (a key element of campuswide servingness) was critical for Latin* Ss' equitable access to classroom participation. Building such a community, thus, was a "mechanism of instructional servingness." The figure presents a visual summary of our findings. (3/5)
