Immigration agents have the authority to detain whom they reasonably suspect are in the country illegally. We found more than 50 Americans who were held after agents questioned their citizenship. They were almost all Latino.
~130
Agents also can arrest citizens who allegedly interfered with or assaulted officers. We compiled cases of about 130 Americans, including a dozen elected officials, accused of assaulting or impeding officers.
~20
Among the citizens detained are nearly 20 children, including two with cancer.
Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.
I did it because the government isnβt.
This is what I found.

The Tribune headline, according to this piece, was "You Can Feed A Family On A Welfare Budget," and this piece's critique includes the fact that the four people interviewed for the article were *not* on welfare and "boasted" that they could live on a welfare budget, which was $5.37 weekly per adult.

Media criticism, 1969:
"The Chicago Tribune told its readers how to eat well on a welfare budget in a March 7 article that could have been ghost-written by Marie Antoinette. Marie told the bread-starved peasants of France to eat cake. The Tribune told Chicago's welfare poor to try cake mix."

Today at #datajconf: we talked about what we've learned about pedagogy in the process of running datajournalismteachers.club. Focused on grounding data journalism in tools *and* humanities, teaching with a learner-centered rather than a "banking" model, and how we learn in community. Join the club!

I'm speaking today at @datajconf.com to data journalists, and trying to convince them it's a good idea to collaborate with civic sector and advocacy organizations on data-driven news stories! Very excited, a little nervous!

She's partnering with @dmil.bsky.social to build Unheard, which is a source auditing tool for news stories. How many government officials are quoted in a story? How many civilians? How many others? This is desperately needed for elite newsrooms and those of us who study the WoT know that very well.

By far, the most needed AI tool I learned about at #datajconf was introduced by Bette Dam asking: "Can we use an AI tool to investigate ourselves [journalists] rather than someone else?" Bette has reported on Afghanistan for decades and knows intimately how deeply flawed elite news coverage is.

I'm at #datajconf in Athens this week and one very cool thing we've done is take a tour of the library of Journalists' Union of Athens Daily Newspapers, where they've kept a history of Greek news outlets. This is one of the oldest prints they have of, I believe, a paper called Neos Aristophanes.

Multiple journalists killed by Israeli strikes on Gaza hospital
A hospital strike in southern Gaza has killed at least eight people, including four journalists. The attack happened on Monday.
Four journalists were killed by an Israeli strike on a Gaza hospital today, including Mariam Dagga, a freelancer with the @apnews.com. She has a 12-year-old son, who was evacuated from Gaza earlier in the war.
She was a true hero, like all of our Palestinian colleagues in Gaza.
